I am writing yet another article. this one is on heart rate monitors and whether they are actually useful. Since you use one can you please elaborate as to its effectiveness in making you a smart/thoughtful and overall
genius of an athlete?

I'm a sucker for compliments.
Heart rate monitors provide real time feedback. For longer races, a quick glance at the watch helps keep the animal in the cage. It also helps on hillier races to keep a steady effort.
It's fun to analyze the data after a race or hard workout.
Not necessarily to dictate the workout or race, but as supplemental data to consider along with the weather and how you're feeling.
If you knew what heartrate corresponded with your lactic threshold you could use it to dictate workouts? I'm asking becasue I'm clueless when it comes to those things
For sure, with thresholds known you could build workouts. One way to determine threshold is to wear a monitor for a flat 10K. After the first mile your heartrate will level off and slowly creep up during the race.
It's not exact, other things like the weather and caffeine will affect your thresholds
