This morning I met Jake for a pool running session: an excruciating 30 minutes of struggling not to sink or swallowing the pee infested waters along with a handful of other dedicated, pain-loving athletes. At least we were good entertainment for the lifeguard, who (when awake) looked rather amused by our activity. If you look hard enough, you'll see the lead weights in Jake's ankles... come and join the fun if you dare.
"If you look closely you can see the led in Jake's ankles."
ReplyDeleteWhole new meaning to "get the led out!"
Jake are you running in a pool with sunglasses?
ReplyDeleteI wear shades to hide the fear in my eyes...
ReplyDeleteI am taking a full week off from running in the hopes of settling the score with my injured shin/ankle/achilles. It felt fine all last week until my run on Saturday. I was running every other day for two weeks after taking a full week off at the end of July.
My goal is to be in the best shape of my life come November 18 when I run Philly 1/2. I've got no races scheduled between now and then. My training has really taken a hit and I haven't been able to run the mileage I'd like. Water running, as mundane as it is, works well for me. I don't use a belt so I feel as if I am getting a great workout in lieu of running.
All I can do is press forward with this and hope it gets me ready for my return to the roads and trails.
Which pool and when?
ReplyDeleteit is very wise to train in the water. better for the legs. old age is starting to creep up. beware-------M
ReplyDeleteI actually disagree with your decision to ditch the belt. I always felt like I was sort of doggie paddling if I wasn't using the belt. I've done alot of water running in my day. Matt Lincoln and myself used to set up a metronome and run to that. Gosh that was horrible. Anyways I felt like I had the best workout wearing the belt. It enabled me to stay upright and really work on my form. I really tried to focus on the running motion. Both arms and legs are important. If you don't have the belt, you are struggling to stay afloat. Sure your heart rate will go up and you'll feel tired. But it would go up if you just stood on land and did jumping jacks. And I don't think doing jumping jacks instead of running will make you bust out that 66:00 half in November.
ReplyDeleteHe's right Jake, it won't...put the damn belt on will ya? (and maybe some shorts next time? ... or not...)
ReplyDeleteI see your point Mr. Munro, but I don't feel like I am struggling to stay afloat. My heart beats hard because I "surge" every other lap or so but am fairly fine when I am warming up/cooling down. Reading "66:00" made my heart beat harder than the workout.
ReplyDeleteI would wear a belt if I had one to compare, but instead wear an anvil around my ankles.
I "run" at by apt bldg - 10201 Grosvenor Place in North Bethesda (AKA Rockville) at 7:15am. I have extra pool passes.
The pool sounds like a good thing...Jake, can we bring cocktails?
ReplyDeleteYes a coffee.
