Congrats to all of those brave souls who ran the Marine Corps Marathon. Running a Marathon is the true endeavor of a champion. Halloween Tonight

A bunch of people are talking about going out to Georgetown tonight for Halloween. M Street is typically shut down to traffic and the entire street is filled with costumes crawling from bar to bar. It's a bit crazy, so I figured I'd start a discussion here on the blog about plans.

Perhaps we can tentatively plan to meet at THE GUARDS at 9 and we can go from there? I will be wearing some sort of hat-themed ensemble. Since I'm going to cheer for GRC MCMers tomorrow from the Store, I plan to crash at someone's pad or sleep in the woods.

Comment if you're interested or have any other ideas.

NOTE - driving into the city tonight will be chaos (per the rally and Halloween). I suggest metroing.

the weekend ahead

This should be a great weekend. Lots going on for sure... Best of luck to everyone racing Sunday. I hope you all fly.

This is for my man Chas and the rebound from chi-town

put your name on it

QUOTE THAT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE

Quote Of The Day from Let's Run
"I have a lot of respect for him, but he never faces anyone. He doesn't like to face other strong athletes. When he does, he has trouble."
- Federico Rosa, Sammy Wanjiru's manager, on Haile Gebrselassie in the marathon. Geb will be running NYC next Sunday in a non time-trial type of race.

How can he say this?

Saturday at The Gtown Store

I am meeting some folks for the standard Store run on Saturday (8:30am). This is my first Saturday run back so I am going to take it slow and easy - an out-and-back on the Towpath. I suspect others will be running an hour or 9-12 miles. The real reason I'm going is because I miss eating Mimi's egg sandwiches after the run.

As Patrick noted, we're also meeting at the store on Sunday morning too. I too encourage all those who don the GRC emblem to come to the Store and support those running the 'thon.

RUN TOMORROW EVE WITH BROOKS

We are having a Brooks sponsored Nightlife Run tomorrow evening at 7pm. The Run features Brooks and the focus will be on their new Nightlife line of apparel. There will be a raffle for some free Brooks gear and post run beer.

The run begins at the Chevy Chase store at 7pm and the event should be over by 9ish.

GRC Cheerleading Tryouts @ MCM

As we mentioned at the meeting last Saturday, we should make a group effort to cheer for our teammates at MCM this Sunday.  The store does not need our help anymore on Sunday morning, so we're free to run around the course and cheer from several locations.  Here's what I'm proposing as both our Sunday run AND a way to cheer on our teammates at SEVEN different locations on the course:

7:45:  Meet at the Georgetown Store.  Give yourself extra time to deal with traffic and parking.
7:55:  Run from the store across the Key Bridge to see the runners go by at mile 1.
8:00:  Cannons go off to start MCM
8:10:  Run back to store to see the race go by at miles 4.5 and 8.5.
9:00:  Begin run from the store.  If you're joining us late, please try to get to the store by 8:30.  Traffic will only get worse as the race goes on.

From there we'll run to see our teammates run by at miles 15.5, 17, 19.5, and the finish.  The total run is 7 miles, but you can add on easily while we wait for everyone, or take out the first mile and only do 6 total.

Here is a map of the proposed route (click picture for larger image):

And here is a link to a course map.

Wednesday Workout

Workout at BCC for this week is 6 x 1200 cutdowns.  I am starting at 74's and will cut down to 72's.  with 2 and 1/2 minute recovery.

CONTEXT FOR GENE MITCHELL'S REPORT

Regarding the note below, please take note that you owe all shoes and free running gear courtesy of Gene as he is very much in control of the RunCo. I am not sure of the economic/business value of financially backing a non professional race team. Quite honestly, there probably is not one or its difficult to quantify. It is rare that I see an elite level runner buy a shoe here.

I have spoken to many a store owner/manager and we are truly in a unique situation for the better.

Bottom line is Gene's generosity and liaise fair approach to managing/getting involved with the race team is a true asset and not to be taken for granted. I have not seen anything like it.

Gene is an avid runner and loves the sport so the race team is an extension of his internal passion and engine.

Last but not least, Cross train like Dirk & Andy and extend your running career.

Store Owner Gene Mitchell's ATM Report

The Army Ten Miler was the usual pomp and circumstance as it is always, and I loved every minute of it! I had a first coral start number of 466 so was able to get into corral number 1. Of course I was late and scurrying to the start as the awesome Army helicopters were flying over head. I did have to stop though, take my hat off and cover my heart in respect to the national anthem being played. The honor due to our armed forces absolutely must be respected. These men and women are the back bone of our country ad above anything today it was an in honor of our armed forces that I had run.

The cannons boom is still shocking as the first time I ran no matter how I prepare. This does always celebrate an overaggressive start and first mile in this Army Ten Miler. After settling in I just tried to maintain my 5:30 goal pace. Rather than bore you with every turn I will just tell you that I slowed between miles 7-8 for no other reason than feeling like I should be content to maintain my pace through 7 miles. Turning onto the bridge I went for it and it hurt. The terrain was up hill at a time when this was the last thing any runner would want to face. I got to 9 miles at 49:27 and thought I had a chance to get to 55 minutes…or may be under. After an uphill I ran with an Army compatriot who helped both of us get to under 55:00 minutes. I finished in 54:42 (unofficial).

What a great day, great event for a great cause. Honor our military.

GRC Mtg Wrap Up & USATF XC

Circling back after yesterday's meeting, here are some of the things we're working on:

1. Chicken Tender Runner is updating the photo stream to the right. The photos are dated and we need fresh ones. He's asking that you send him pics to add to this stream.

2. Shannon & Emily are going to create a separate blog/page for the women's team which will be linked to this blog. The purpose of which will be to start a dialogue for a women's team.

3. I will be adding a calendar with races to the right hand side of the screen. Once the calendar is in, please update and add races. Each race should have a "captain" or, more simply, a point person.

4. If you're interested in hearing more about the coach, talk to Joe Wiegner

5. Wednesday workouts should be suggested/planned during the weekend, and weekend runs should be planned during the Wednesday workout. Someone running the workout on Wednesday, should post something today/tomorrow.

6. Karl and I are working on USATF XC. Below is who I have on the roster/interested in going to spectate. Those in bold I believe are definitely running. Please confirm or deny your status. You will need to take Friday, December 10 off from work. Right now it appears we have enough for a B team and two van loads. I sent an email yesterday to USATF to find out how we can renew our membership...then, those below, will need to 1. sign up/renew membership for USATF, 2. sign up for the race. More on that later. Someone could start pricing out some hotel rooms - two double beds per room (plus cots) seems ideal (ie - cheap).

Andy Sovonick
Patrick Murphy
Charlie Ban
Karl Dusen
Jordan Snyder
Alabama Paul Guevara
Jerry Outlaw
Joe Wiegner
Dave Burnham
Jake Klim - run or spectate, but definitely going
Jake Marren - run or spectate
Petey Towpath - spectate?
Sam Luff - needs to check on taking Friday off, interested in possibly driving down late that night
Patrick Hughes - unknown
Chris Raabe - per injury
Ryan Hanson - see how things shake out

Anyone else???

The Great One comes to GRC

"Haile Gebrselassie, arguably the greatest living distance runner in history, has graciously agreed to be our featured speaker at a fundraiser for the Girls Gotta Run Foundation on Monday, November 8, 2010. The event, which is co-sponsored and hosted by the Chevy Chase Running Company, will take place at the Chevy Chase Running Company store at 4461 Willard Avenue, Chevy Chase, Maryland, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Tickets will be $25.00 and sold only at the door, starting at 6 p.m. All proceeds will benefit GGRF. A portion of the funds will be set aside by GGRF to subsidize scholarships for promising but impoverished Ethiopian running girls to attend training at the Yaya Africa Athletics Village, an athletic center in Sululta, Ethiopia, which is presently under construction and in which Mr.Gebrselassie is a partner. Proceeds from the sale of autographed copies of a limited number of posters of Mr. Gebrselassie will also be donated to GGRF. Light refreshments will be served."

Peter's note:
I am filming this event for the Girls Gotta Run Foundation. Klim and Jimmy are also filming taking/taking pictures. If you are interested in being a volunteer production assistant or interviewer, please let me know. You will be put to work from 6-10pm but will be able to get into the event for free with a media pass.

MEDIA FOR HAILE EVENT

Peter, there are several other entities involved with media coverage. Please call me so we can coordinate space/logistics, etc. Max

HAILE

Hey, regarding the Haile event, I will need some people as volunteers to help with logistics and management. If you volunteer you get an automatic entry at no charge. Please let me know. Max

Article about distance running on ploscompbiol.org

There has an article on PLoS talks about research from mathematical/computational approaches for performance in marathon. I think it is very interesting, maybe you will too.

MARINE CORPS MASSACRE

I am flying Dylan in all the way from California to run this and am giving Jake some very powerful drugs so that he might run as well.

Bottom line is that we should be able to win the team challenge provided we have eough runners. I have two more entries.

This is a race that is winnable for some of you so why not cement your name in history?

Regarding Boston, maybe we can get the Running Company to get a suite or partner with Lets Run and have a party or something along these lines.

Max

Redemption in 2011 Boston Marathon?!

Howdy y'all!

2011 Boston Marathon registration opens at 9:00a (EST) on Monday, October 18th. I wanna join the party to run this "little" race; but I would like to share the lodging cost with somebody? If we get a room and split the cost into two or three or four or more ways, then that would be a win-win.

If you or you know someone interested, please email me at eml13297@gmail.com

YOU CAN STILL BE A CHAMPION

Hey, I have some entries into Marine Corps. For those that were massacred in Chicago and want redemption, give me a shout and you can redeem yourselves.

GOOD LUCK

Good luck in the Windy City

My money is on crazy Chris Bain. He says he runs once a week and is chained to the office chair but this will play to his advantage. He came into the store to buy some Nike Frees.

For those who are injured, such is the way of it.

Do you think Kobe Bryant has played a game of B-Ball in the last five years pain free?

I read once that khalid Khannouchi won the Chicago Marathon with a stress fracture in his hip.

Chris Raabe has some major foot disorder where his foot actually comes apart.

Chuck Moeser used to pound nails into his arms to deaden the pain pre marathon.

No pain no gain

It's all about Chicago now!

GRC is sending a dozen of its finest (including two ex pats) to beat the streets in the Windy City. This is by far the largest team ever assembled for an “away” race. Most will depart for the Midwest tomorrow so here is to them!

I will be monitoring the race from the GRC mobile news desk (in New Hampshire) and will post breaking news and results as they become available. Check back on Sunday for all the latest.

It's an adventure race and involves solving clues and knowing your way around DC, but if you win you get $750!  Here's the website.  If you sign up today via Living Social you can register for $35 instead of $70.

My experience with these types of races is that competitive runners can DOMINATE with a little planning ahead.  I, unfortunately, won't be able to participate :(
