RACE REPORT

THIS MORNING MYSELF, "OLD MAN" MATT ERNST, JAKE KLIM, JASON DWYER, MELISSA TANNER AND SCOTT MUNRO HIT THE GW10K IN ALEXANDREA. I WAS THERE IN SPIRIT AND TO TEST THE LEGS, JAKE AND JASON WERE THERE TO RUN WELL AND DID!

MELISSA ACTUALLY WON THE WOMEN'S RACE AND WILL BE A FORCE IN THE WOMEN'S DIVISION FOR YEARS TO COME. WE JUST NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT GEORGE BUCKHEIT DOES NOT STEAL HER TO RUN WITH PACERS:( SCOTT IS GETTING BACK INTO SHAPE AND WILL BE STRONG COME SUMMER. MATT IS ON HIS WAY TO A 3 HR. BOSTON MARATHON.

IN ALL IT WAS A GOOD SCENE AND IT WAS NICE TO HIT THE ROADS AGAIN WITHOUT TOO MUCH PAIN. THE HAMSTRING AND BUTT STILL BOTHER ME, BUT THEY SEEM TO BE GETTING BETTER. JASON AND JAKE PR'D(I THINK) SO IT SEEMS THAT THEY ARE MOTIVATED AND READY FOR PRIME TIME.

OH, AND I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM JUSTIN SO PERHAPS HE IS ON A DATE:)

  1. Here is my report...

A four-man pack developed quickly (which included the top runner in the DC area) and I hung on behind in 5th. The leader of the pack shifted 4 times before the first mile so I thought I should try to hang near it when the straggler(s) came back (assuming someone would get dropped). My first mile was 5:03 and my second was 5:12. I was soon passed by Pat McAddie (American Univ grad, 24:30, 50 min 10 miler) and hung on in 6th for mile 3 (15:22) and 5k (15:59). As we rounded the cone and headed back to repeat the course I was quickly joined by Navy grad Bert Rodriguez. He sat tucked behind me and I attempted to pull away. He finally passed me around mile 4 and I fought to stay close by. At the final turn around I sat in 7th place but was quickly passed by my training partner Jason Dwyer and some other guy. I hit mile 5 in 26:00 and fought like hell to make a move or at least hang on. I was in a lot of pain but knew I had to hold on in order to run well. I still had something in me but was bothered by cramps/stitch in my stomach since just before 5k (not enough pain to really impact me physically but a mental downer). With about a 3/4 mile to go I emptied my tanks and caught both Jason and the other guy and together Jason and I went after Bert. We split the distance between us but soon Jason pulled away as I was, at this point, hurting bad. In the last 1/4 mile Bert pull away and finished in 6th (3208), Jason 7th (3210) and me 8th.

I ran a PR 32:12 which I am happy about, but I need to work a bit more on my strength. I felt like totally "poop" in the last mile and almost felt like I was going to throw up (never has happened to me before). My splits were fairly even for a road race and my 5k splits of 15:59/16:13 are encouraging.

  2. In watching Jake and Jason, yall, looked comfy. so i could not tell you were hurtin. the only guy that seemed to be intense was the mighty Gurmessa. he seemed relaxed in the begining but when i saw him on the last straightaway he had a determined look on his face that emphasized the "nobody is touchin this" message.

on a serious note, Jake, maybe the key for you in the next race is to shoot for negative splits. i know you PR'd but why not try to finish with power and not with a feeling "oh god when will this end" for me, i never felt uncomfortable today. not worth it. but in general, this is the way i prefer it. start slow and finish strong. i might not reach the fastest times but the race is fun. I guess it depends on goals and such. today i would have been happier probably running with some good looking women and providing support and such:(

  4. Awsome job guys. When we get these workouts together you will see even more progress. Thanks for the recap. Jason, Jake really good job this early in the season. I think you ran smart put yourself in the mix, was tough when it got really bad. You just need some more strength = more running and a few key work outs you will be looking to break 30 min.

  5. Thanks for the words of encouragement. Would be nice to run a solid 10k in late april/early may- so let me know when to plug in these "few key workouts." I'd pretty stoked with anything under 31.

  6. Great job everyone! I was running on the ice covered bike paths on Saturday. No date Saturday night but I did go to a party and paid for it the next morning with a massive hangover.
