THE MARATHON

I spoke to Wilson about the LA marathon and he said it was real tough. The hills along with the heat were devastating. He hit the half in 66 minutes and was hurting after mile 16 or 17. From mile 20 it was the Wilson gut fest. He said the next couple of days after the marathon were real hard and he had difficulty walking.

Bottom line is that the marathon is no joke and regardless of what you ran a half marathon in, the full on marathon is another story and can humble and the best of runners.

Be wise and smart if you are training for your first marathon. Go out slow! no need to spend the last three miles walking.

  1. I think you've got it all wrong. My goal is to sprint the first 2 miles and therefor be well ahead of my pace. I can then simply move into my race pace from there.

    I'll write a book about it after and take you all out to lunch.

  7. I'm with Jake, I'm planning on going out in 5:30s and see how long I can hold on. There's a small uphill at mile 19 in the national marathon which is where I plan on dropping 5:20s.

    I might regret saying this but I think I'm ready for 26.2... ready to crush it!!! HA. I'm just kidding. I have a note on my fridge that says "Respect 26.2"

  8. In my National Marathon debut last year, i ran real slow for the first 10 miles and then ran into this guy, scott munro who was barley hanging in there. Somehow we struck up a conversation and managed to talk about football or something for like and 60 minutes. at every corner there was a scott munro family member yelling for him to go on. all i had was the dc faithful. at mile 20 or so, scott gave me permission to go ahead. i proceeded to get stronger and finished without any pain.

  10. Good discussion - the marathon is much different than any race. Very comfortable until the pain starts setting in, and even then I find it fairly manageable compared to the pain of a 5k. Both my marathons were pretty conservative efforts (i.e. I could stand afterwards) but really brought out the slightest of muscular imbalances. Between the marathons and sitting at a desk for 9 hours a day, I think my body/walking-form has aged 20 years in the course of 10 months. Max, you want to hit up the massage therapists section in the phone book and set up a double date? I don't want to make Terrell jealous though!
