Foot pain

I am experiencing this odd tenderness/pain on the bottom of my foot just south of the small toe. It is pretty concentrated and when I walk around it feels like there should be a lump there, but then it's just swollen and pink. First noticed it yesterday but I did not feel it much last night during a tempo run on the treadmill, though I think it started with irritation via the Luna Racers which seem to be, well, rubbing my feet the wrong way. Anyway, I got through 9 this morning but it was pretty unpleasant, as it took 30-40 minutes to dull it. This is not Plantar, as that is mainly in the heel and arch, right? Suggestions?

  1. Hmm. It doesn't sound like plantar fascitis, since that occurs more towards the heel of the foot. Maybe a bit of bursitis?(which is inflammation of the fluid filled sac that lies in between tissues, and is identified as localized pain or swelling, tenderness, and pain with motion of the tissues in the affected area) It could very well have been caused by the luna racers. Bursitis in the foot is pain on the ball of the foot right underneath any of the toes.

  3. No hate for the Luna Racers. I think the issue was wearing them on the treadmill; too much heat, friction, weird blisters.

    CVS: I think you are on the money. I read something that said bursitis and heel spurs occur together, and that seems to be the case. I iced and took some ibuprofren this morning and it already feels much better. Will repeat this evening.

  4. Dickson, I've had similar symptoms in the past. I kicked it by temporarily shifting back from racers to sturdier trainers and avoiding homogeneous, hard surfaces. You're near the mall so you can get on the grass.

  5. Sounds like bruising and irritation from the running shoes. Try and train for the next few runs with 2 layers of socks.

    That may add as a buffer as you brake the new shoes in.

    If it persists, try some better shoe inserts that are padded.

    Of course, ice to reduce inflammation.

  7. man,the pain is a bit intense today. woke me up in the middle of the night. seeing a doc in a couple hours.
