More Marathon Stories

This guy ran at grandmas and his story was on ESPN. Only a 15 minute segment: http://trackandfieldphoto.com/DisplayNextJpg.php?061118_1628_0163_RLM

I'm not good at uploading photos, if you click on the image, you will see him with my alma mater's current stud, Don Letts. The photo was from cross nationals... a complete mud pit.

NY Times covers running

The NY Times has an article today on the Hansons-Brooks running team and all the guys they are sending to the marathon trials this weekend. They also have a video interview with Keflezighi and Abdirahman. Go here: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/31/sports/othersports/31marathon.html

Saturday Run

Does anyone plan on running tomorrow morning? I would like to run 10-12 but don't feel like treking down to the store for an 8:30am run. I'd love to meet somewhere else (DC or MD) around 9am.

Anyone? Anyone?

Alternate Miles - Friday

I'm wondering if anyone is interested in doing a strength workout on Friday around 6 or so on the canal. The workout is called Alternate Miles and it was our break and butter at Florida State. It's basically a controlled tempo alternating mile paces. For example, 5:30/6:30/6:00/5:30/6:30/6:00. It's a tough, yet phenomenal workout. I'm hoping to get up to 10+ by January. Let me know if you are interested by posting here.

MARINE CORPS

I think I am going to give the Marine Corps Marathon a whirl. I would appreciate all the support, love, encouragement, blah, blah, blah, folks can provide. Even Old Man Ernst yelling profanities at me will be a welcome sight. The more smiling faces, the better_________M

Running Scared

This has nothing to do with running, but figured I'd pass it along. Melissa and I are going to a (insert ghoulish music here) Haunted Forest on Saturday night (end ghoulish music).
If anyone is interested let me know. Info below...
Markoff's Haunted Forest
When: Daily 6 p.m. (October 25th through October 31st)
19120 Martinsburg Road
Dickerson, MD 20842
You have to sign a waiver just to get into this haunted house. Now, that's our idea of a good time. In addition to the main trail, attractions include a haunted bus, a death jump, a bat flight, hayrides and a fortune teller.
Admission Price:
Oct. 19-21 and 26-28: $25 All other nights: $20

A RISING STAR

ALLEN, Great race yesterday. 24:45 would have gotten you the win any other day. Can't believe Gurmessa and his boys came all the way from NYC or wherever. Good competition brings out your best, though. Good job! ___________M

Tying the Knot

Shortly after the disastrous Army "11.3" Miler in 2005, DaveO first walked up to LT and started the conversation by asking, "What's that written on your hand?" (The answer was her goal time splits). Shortly after the disastrous Chicago Marathon, Dave had another question for Laura. A BIG question. This time, her answer was YES!

Yes, we will be walking (not running) down the aisle together. We are considering wearing our blue Brooks singlets as a sign of solidarity...but then again, maybe not.

-DaveO and LT (soon to be LO, or LTO, or LT-O....Ahhhhh!)

ADDITIONAL PARKING

As "I have found the fountain of youth" Ernst said, there looks to be an army of runners showing up. If you are running a little late, park at one of the multiple parking areas before the Beach Drive interface. This means park at the soccer field as you turn off East West Highway or at one of the multiple little parking lots on the left as you drive the mile or so up the road towards our meeting spot. Hope this helps. Also, Money, on a serious note, you need to let me know if you need a lift. _____later, M

Saturday Run

Any interest in meeting at the MD/DC line of Rock Creek Park (Beach Drive) this Saturday instead of the store? What is the consensus.

10-12 miles...at 8:30am.

CROSS TRAINING AND SUCH

Unless you have the genetic makeup of Wardian, which nobody does, don't overdue it with the running. I know its tempting, especially with competitive fires glowing. However, no need to run mega miles for 5 and 10K races. You can probably run 45 miles a week and do some other things and lose nothing. Take a few hrs a week to bike, use the eliptical, lift weights, do pilates, etc. Its especially key to work the core muscles. lower back and stomach.

free advice. take it or dish it________M

Tempo Run Wed

I plan on getting in a 10 mile tempo run on Wed. leave from the store at 6 (so it doesn't get too dark) I would like to hit descending times, starting around 6:10 and bottoming at 5:30. (maybe something like 6:10, 6:00, 6:00, 5:55, 5:50, 5:50, 5:50, 5:45, 5:40, 5:30)

WHERE IS EVERYONE RACING?

I think Klim is going up Baltimore way. Carr, Dwyer, Melissa? You all are sort of like Knights of the Roundtable out for Holy Grail. Good luck!

BTW____Allan, unlike Mighty Munro, who is too lazy to meet his potential, you look like you are rounding into form. Go for it! Sorry Scott, you get a blast for going through the motions with the weekly massages and such but not putting the throttle into full gear. I know, fighting words but it makes life interesting.

ITS A BATTLEFIELD OUT THERE

I suppose nobody ever said Running was supposed to be fun or easy. Just make reference to Wilson's overly stated comments about "RUNNING NOT BEING A JOKE AND THAT IT IS VERY SERIOUS BUSINESS" I know we all used to make fun of this but it is clear there is merit in it.

Jake and Dave, your assignment is to take Laura and Melissa on much deserved vacations somewhere where running is not allowed. Massages, Scuba diving and good tropical drinks, only:(

Also, did anyone notice that super marathoner Dane ran Steamtown in 2:58! thats great---Good job Dane.

As for the Chicago Women's finish, why didn't anyone tell the leader to huff it with a 1/4 mile to go? Thats totally bizarre______M

workout on wed morning, if any are interested meet 7:30 at the store.

I plan on racing somewhere this weekend, but would like to try something like:

mile: 5:00
mile 4:45
8 x 400 @ 66-68.

marathon reports:

Steamtown. At mile 8, melissa was tied for 1st at around 6:05 pace (that's sub 2:40!). By the half Steve Crane was in the lead. My info is from jake at the race site.

In chicago, from the live update: Laura K Turner, 00:58:59 (net) @ 15K. Pace 6:19. Predicted 02:45:36. By The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. The pace is rather slow with the leaders. The men went through 9 miles at 5:05, the women at 5:50 pace. I have a report that it is already 76 degrees in the shade.

See you then.

9am start time is preferred.

Any takers?

Darrell General runs Chicago

Most of you might not know of Darrell General, but when I cam to DC he was the best runner around. He has won the Army 10miler 3 times and marine corps marathon twice.

There was a great piece in the Washington Times about his attempt this weekend at Chicago, at qualifying for a 6th olympic trials. He is in his early 40s and this is not an easy thing to do.

He is a true running WARRIOR, as I like to put it. He juggles a bunch of jobs, has a family, wears knee pads, runs in the middle of the night and all for the love of running.

talk about grit and determination_______Good luck all and run well

Good Luck Sports Quiz

Task: Title the picture on the left using the words "Laura Turner" and "Chicago". Can you guess the link?

Big weekend, I'm not even running but already getting excited. Kick ass $teve Money and Melissa Tanner.

workout recap:

Ben, for the "little shape" that he's in, crushed it today:

mile: 5:10 (2:56 recovery)
400: 69 (1:33 rec.)
400: 69 (1:52 rec.)
Mile: 5:00 (3:05 rec)
400: 69 (1:32 rec.)
400: 70 (2:06 rec)
mile: 4:46 for Ben. I pulled up with a stomach glitch- ran @1200 at 5:00 pace. (rec-2:58)
400: 68 (1:48 rec)
400: 61 for Ben, 66 for me.

Not the best workout for me, but not too disappointed. Was up late studying for a test and had some stomach issues.

HILLS

I need to do some hills. I would like to do some in G-town on LOVERS LANE on WED OR THURS. LOOKING TO DO 20 sets of up and down. ALL ABILITIES, SKILLS AND SUCH ARE WELCOME. SOMETIME BETWEEN 5-6:15 works. Please let me know in advance if interested.

Ran 32 miles this past weekend. Legs are tired and hamstring is tight but overall, ok. I went to see the PT at the store yesterday and it was very helpful. Thanks Ben for setting that up________________M
