Unofficial: Allen Carr Wins King Street Mile
WIRE: ALLEN CARR WINS KING STREET MILE IN 4:17...MORE...
Happy New Years!
So I thought I would partake in the long musing style of recent bloggership and share a few thoughts on running in quebec, which is a seven hour drive north of Boston.
For those historical buffs, quebec will kick off its 400th year celebration. It is the oldest "western" settlement in north america. It is neat top think about how jamestown was founded in the same year (give or take a year) and survives as a field. quebec is booming. in 1609, shakespeare was still alive.
French is the primary language, though nearly all know english. Their license plates say in french "never forget" and referes to their loss to the brits. yet, their money has the queen on it.
their traffic lights blink green when they switch over... I guess to alert people that it is time to go. there is a pedestrian cycle with each intersection. At this time all sides can cross, no cars can turn or cross... so, one could cross diagonally if one was inclined.
It has snowed almost every day up here. they have some intense snow clearing equipment... some which look very intimidating. Many of the machine collect the snow they plow, not just push it... so the plow won't snow in a parked car. genius! They work round the clock, so the city does not shut down... as evident by there not being an runs on the grocery stores.
Christine and I had spent our second new years up here (5 years ago). Very romantic. There is an old, walled section on top of a hill that over looks the St. Laurence river. Cannons line the walls, and all the building are made of stone. They will have fireworks tonight.
I recommend this place to anyone. Fells like Europe without crossing the pond.
Happy new year to all!

NEW YEARS RUN
I spoke with Jake about a New Year's run. I suggest going to Difficult Run Parking lot off of Georgetown Pike in Great Falls, VA on Tuesday the 1st at 10am. There are great trails and high quality running all in all. We can get brunch after. It would be great to have 6 or 7 people out. Give a shout to the blog if interested.
The run is not a race or killer workout. Use it as a nice kickoff for yourself and the new year. People can pair up, do their own thing, etc. and just meet back at the lot at a designated time.

TRAINING
SETTING OUT:
Today, a bunch of folks met up in Great Falls, VA for tough training run on hills. We met Chuck Moeser along with Susannah K. on their turf for some fun on rolling soft trails. I had not run out here before and was amazed at the quality of the terrain as well as the sheer beauty. In terms of scenery and hills, it is much more substantial than Rock Creek or anything in DC. This is not taking anything away from Rock Creek but merely pointing out a fact. Living out in the burbs has its perks, I suppose.
GOALS AND REASONS FOR RUNNING:
Susannah K. is running the Olympic Trials this Spring and is aiming at a 2:37 time. Chuck M. plans on getting the USA record for the 10K for men in the 55-59 age group, Allen, myself, Robert and Pat are just training hard.
TERRAIN AND INTENSITY:
The run today was all rolling hills and we did 11.5 of them. Chuck is a very tough runner and pushed us at 6:20 pace the entire time. He starts fast and ends hard. Not bad for someone in their 50s.
LESSON LEARNED:
I am going to begin a new training cycle that focuses on less quantity and more quality. No more than 60 miles a week but each mile will count. As one gets older, time doing meaningful runs is more important than accumulating miles.
Chuck M. and some of these veterans who have lasted for 30 years are the one's you should be conferring with. Proof is in their longevity and sustained success over the duration.
NOTED OBSERVATION:
I have seen a million and one runners come and go from this area who were real strong for a year or two. All sub 33 minute 10K and 16 minute 5K guys. For every 20 of them, there is one or two who last for more than 4 to 5 years, excluding Wardian, who belongs in his own realm of reality.
LONG TERM GOAL ON A WAY TO BE AND RUN WITH A SMILE:
Running is an art meant to be crafted and mastered. Its more about staying injury free and keeping a healthy and positive mental outlook than simply achieving a fast time or beating others. Running and overall physical fitness supports a more balanced soul and a more balanced soul makes someone a more satisfied athlete.
Also, always run with people and more importantly, people who are supportive and make you laugh.
CONCLUSION:
Off the soapbox

Boston Preview
Earlier this month I decided I would review at least part of the Boston Marathon course since I plan to run it this coming April. I asked an old high school running rival and friend, Jim, to see whether or not he wanted to run it with me. He eagerly accepted the challenge and we decided we would meet in Natick (roughly the 10 mile mark) sometime after Christmas. Jim ran Boston last year and ran low 2:30s…he’s also posted some fast collegiate track times running for Trinity College. Anyway, running with Jim is always fun and he’d be a great guide.
I tumbled out of bed this morning and found my cockatiel (bird) on my comforter looking down at me…I’ll explain this later. Sheets of rain was pouring down outside so the last thing I wanted to do today was run 16 miles in the frigid rain. I called Jim a little past 8 and tried to encourage him to run tomorrow with me instead. The day was supposed to by 45 degrees and sunny. Can’t beat that! But no, Jim had to head back to Connecticut on Friday so I agreed to meet him. I rushed around the house; made some joe, grilled up an egg sandwich, began to hydrate then began the 1:45 trek from Cape Cod to Natick. I got to Natick Center in plenty of time and piddypatted about the square. A cold steady rain was still falling and I wanted to get started so I could get it over with. A big snowstorm was moving east from the mid-west and meteorologists indicated downtown Boston could receive at least an inch of snow.
I finally met Jim and the two of us began heading east…towards Boston proper. For the most part, the sidewalks were covered with ice; sometimes it was transparent and other times thick and bumpy. Clearly not an ideal running surface. I opted for the main road but that wasn’t much better. There was 3 ft of snow towering between the sidewalk and road which, over the course of the week, had avalanched into the shoulder. Jim and I talked about old times, new times, good times and bad times over the loud drone of wet tire wheels. We dogged along at a leisurely pace before finally making a right at the fire station…only this wasn’t the right right. After a few miles (who was counting?) Jim realized that none of this looked familiar. I didn’t take much stock in it at first…I mean who really remembers every turn and road of a marathon course? We stopped at a Dunkin Donuts to my delight. I had to take a pee and wanted to pound down a cruller or two before hitting the road. We asked the local gentry where the marathon course was and a homely looking woman with disheveled hair replied “that stars in Hopedale”. Actually it starts in HOPKINGTON, but that wasn’t the point, clearly we were well past that part of our journey and we weren’t interested in jokes. Finally, between three different customers, we figured out how to get back to the course…it was simply a minor detail. As much as I would have liked to hang out with my new friends and drink some hot DnD joe, I knew we had to get on our way. I left, egg sandwich-less and donut-less and headed back into the cold rain.
After about a half mile, we turned down a side street and got back on Commonwealth Ave…only to realize we had missed the Newton Hills! We then decided to backtrack and run back down the hills. Jim lectured me that this was certainly a part of the course I had to see. After about 10 minutes we reached the Johnny Kelley/Heart Break Hill Statue, then began the long climb back up 2 of the 3 big hills.
We were soon passed by a Greater Boston Track Club Runner and we began to shoot the shit. It turns out (which is no big surprise in the running community) we all knew someone who we each knew blah blah blah. I’ve already forgotten his name but “Kenny” was good company and he guided us all the way down to Cleveland Circle. Here we asked a few people whether we were on the marathon course and they giggled and squirmed how we had run from Natick and/or that we were running all the way downtown.
Jim and I soon started to get cold and it seemed like we picked up the pace…which was fine with me. I was still made I hadn’t gotten an egg sandwich and a Boston Crème some 5 miles back. Eventually we trucked through to the finish and slapped each other’s hand. Done! Made it! Okay, now let’s eat. We went to 7-11 and I gorged on a blueberry bagel and a Gatorade. Jim bought Pringles, snickers and God knows what else. We hailed a cab and together devoured our Thanksgiving Feast en route to my sister’s new pad in Southie. She then kindly drove us back to Natick, where I, in turn, got in my car and drove into the pouring twilight back to Cape Cod.
All said, we ran at least 18 miles. I was glad to see the course but running on the shoulder in the cold rain sucked. I’m realizing now this post is much…much, much, much….much tooo long, but I’m sick of looking at Santa. I’ve decided not to review or spell check.
Happy running,
KLIM

PICTURE INFO: Rich Muno’s sculpture ‘‘Young at Heart’’ depicts Johnny Kelley crossing the finish line at age 27, when he won his first of two Boston Marathons, and at 84, when he ran his last Marathon. Kelley, who ran the Marathon 61 times, died last year at age 97. The statue is along Heartbreak Hill, a name said to have been coined in 1936 when Kelley ran neck and neck with Ellison “Tarzan” Brown. Kelley tapped Brown on the shoulder as he passed him. Brown then sped up, and Globe sports reporter Jerry Nason wrote that Brown regained the lead, “breaking Kelley’s heart.”
TWO ITEMS
One:
I am doing a run on sat out at Great Falls in Northern, VA. Its all trails. I am trying to throw some variety in the runs and keep the outlook fresh. For those that are interested in joining in, give me a shout at Max.Lockwood@gmail.com. We can carpool out there and have breakfrast or something after. Its a 20-25 minute ride from the store in G-town. I can meet people at the store at 7:45am, if need be. I plan on going no more than 14 miles or 95 minutes. Others can do what they will and we will wait and so forth.
Two:
Today I had a chance to catch up with Chris Raabe on a run. Chris ran 2:17 at the trials and is a good example of someone who has really improved over the past 2 or 3 years. Aside from being a talented runner he has quite a bit of knowledge about the art of running. For those interested in pushing it to the limits, you might want to catch up with him on one of his workouts. I think he typically leaves from the store everyday at 3pm for a run.

A NEW YEAR AWAITS
YO,
Running is great and it is the reason we have met one another. I will say that aside from Runners/Running, I think that you all are a swell bunch of people with interesting personalities, insights, senses of humor and good hearts.
As you all know, not all social circles, sports groups, etc. share these traits.
Don't take any of these random meetings for granted. Try and use the runs and running experiences here to enhance your overall life in terms of social networking, getting jobs, helping one another out in different ways, etc.
These opportunities do not avail themselves forever and chances, like people, come and go.
Relish moments.
take care______M

Thanks everyone
Thank you all for making the running racing season a success. I was really happy that we won every team race we entered. Also I was pumped that we took a team to Club cross nationals. Props to our men's trials competitors Chris Raabe, Gene Mitchell, Steve Meinelt, and Eric Post. Props to Vanessa Hunter for her spring Olympic trials run (maybe Mary kate?)
Goals this year get a better team equipment package, run the club cross nationals, run some indoor races, have a workout training day.
Thanks everyone especially Jake for hosting the blog.
(Happy holidays and New Years)

Happy Hour
This is obviously not running related, but I am meeting some folks at Chef Geoff's (near American Univ) tonight for $5 burgers and massive 32 oz mugs of beer for $7.95. KLIM believes brew selection is "top notch" and burgers are among the "tastiest in the DC area".
I believe both specials end at 7pm.

Online training logs
I've seen the training logs some of you use and I was hoping to get some recommendations, specially from those whose features you have found really useful (graphs, charts, shoe mileage tracking, route mapping, etc). Has anybody used www.runningahead.com's training logs?
TEAM RACES COMING UP
If anyone is interested in running as a team for the GW B-Day 10K in Alexandrea on Feb 16th and doing the RRCA club challenge 10 miler out in Columbia, MD on the 24th of Feb, let me know asap. We need men and women for both.

Kings Street Mile
Since I am a loser, don't drink and have no firm plans for New Years, I may run the Kings Street Mile in Alexandria. I hear the course is fast. I might hang around in Old Town after the race.

RACE REPORT
I woke up yesterday with a slight hangover or feeling a bit out of it. Not sure why as I only was out until 2am on Friday and did mostly dancing and talking.
So when I woke up at 5:45am I really just wanted to press snooze. Something called FOR THE LOVE OF THE SPORT, got me out of bed, though, and so I made three cups of instant coffee with fake/powdered creamer and downed a snickers bar and said, lets go.
I was then off to pick up newbie Matt Herzog. I nabbed him and we started out on our trek to Baltimore to run the Celtic Solstice 5miler. Lucky for us, Matt has some kind of phone that also provides mapping capability. Since we were venturing into uncharted territory, such a device was bound to and did come in handy. As we drove the Baltimore, Matt diligently reviewed our directions throughout to make sure we were heading the right way.
Even with such technology, we barely made the race start in time and had to blaze down to the packet pickup tent to get our stuff and get to the starting line. Once we got there however, we had to wait a little bit for guys in Celtic quilts playing bagpipes and drinking beer to mozey on over to the start line and give the official salute to get the race going. While waiting we met up with another member of the team, Laura Ramos, a runner who has started coming to the Wednesday group runs in the eve.
As I waited at the line, I noticed some of the usual regulars like running legends Dave Berardi, Chris Chattin and Bob Marino. Back in the day, Marino would battle Jim Hage and Darrell General for all of the local racing titles. All of these guys are local Baltimore area running regulars who have been winning/running well for years.
Since we only had three of our own team members, I had to borrow a few guys from Falls River Running Co. Ryan McGrath, one of their leaders was kind enough to give us two runners to make it a team of five. However, he was not kind enough to give us any thoroughbreds as he saved those for his squad:)
BANG----- the gun went off and we started. Not knowing what I could do, I ran the first mile in 5:50 and gradually got into the race so that by mile 4 I was passing guys left and right and settled for a 27:24 time. I am happy considering I did no prep for this race. Matt Herzog Prd in 30 and some change and Laura came in # 3 for the women. However, our team finished # 3 overall.
In all it was a very positive experience. I have never run in Baltimore before and enjoyed the change of scene.
After the race, there was good food and cheer as the Baltimore running community put on a first class show.
I highly recommend these races in places an hr or so away as they provide glimpses into other communities and areas that are fun to run in.

Weekend Runs
I'm planning to run 10 or so from the GRC on Saturday morning at 9:00am. I want to avoid an "out and back" along the canal, but would like to include it in some capacity. Any ideas are welcome.
------------------------------------
On Sunday, I'm sleeping "late" and running at Riley's Lock at 10:00am. My plan is to run the first 8 at 6:20-30 pace, the next 5 at 6:00 pace and then cool down the last 2 miles. Total is 15 miles...3/4 of it on trails/towpath/dirt road. There are options to make the run 13 or even less. It's a great run for those who haven't done it before. Directions are below.
------------------------------------
There will be a "Brooks Pacer" or two at each of these runs. It should spice things up. I'm bringing a switch blade in case any of them try something.
------------------------------------
RILEY'S LOCK Directions: From I-495, take the River Road west exit. Continue several miles until River Road turns left at Seneca Road (there is a stop sign). Turn left, then proceed a few hundred yards until Riley's Lock Road on your left (13015 Riley's Lock Road - Google Maps, MapQuest ).
------------------------------------
Let me know if you're coming by Friday evening so we know whether to wait. Please note that cell reception at Riley's is spotty. Hope to see you there.

I NEED A HORSE OR TWO
OK, I know some of you are true to your rituals and such and so, respect is due to such stuff. After reading some of your training logs I said, oh my, true fanatics.
None the less, we have a team heading to B-more on Sat morning for a five mile race. I have several folks doing it but need one young and hardy braveheart to throwdown. I spoke with some other teams running it and they have at least one thoroughbred lacing em up.
I was young once and would not think twice about such stuff. Even as a dumb old guy, I don't give a damn.
Anyway, if someone is so inlclined, no shame need be thrust upon you.

DINNER FOR MICHELLE
HI EVERYONE,
Michelle Sikes, who has been a regular/dedicated runner at many of the training runs and has participated as an active supporter, at races, is leaving for her full-time training for the Olympic Trials, begining December, 21st.
I propose we take her out for dinner and drinks this sat night(the 15th).
I am thinking somewhere in the District and close to metro. Maybe Woodley Park, which is on the Red Line. We can go to Adams Morgan for food and drink or pick something more civil in Woodley. Either way, please send me an e-mail or comment to this post, if you are interested in coming along.

Mad Mud
Go to the link below to see a few pictures from the mudslinging action in Ohio. I encourage everyone to actively seek out a cross country race such as this one, not too cold and filled with brown sludge to wade through. Pay no attention to times, just jump for joy that your mom is no longer around to tell you not to play in the dirt. A good time was had by all and JJ (Jason and Jake) showed a bunch of the Pacers whats up.

RACE REPORT
Went out and did the Jingle Bell Race this am. First and foremost, our team won! Michelle and Vanessa both ran well for the women and the guys did reasonably well to take the team crown. Not much to write about as the it was the usual out and back Haines Point race. I think I have run a race on this course, at least 100 times so there is only so much one can say. Either you are in good shape and run a real fast race or you do not. I am neither in bad or good shape. somewhere in the middle. My lungs and overall fitness is excellent. The legs are not what they once were in terms of turnover. Maybe that is the aging process doing its thing. We will see.
Bottom line is I feel great and never really hurt or felt too much pain. Ran a total of 14 miles today including the run to the race and then the run after(5 miles).
Next on the horizon is this little 5 mile race in Baltimore. I am hoping to round up 5 or 6 people to run it. I have never run in that neck of the woods, so I figure I will run the race and add 6 or 7 miles to it and make it a medium/long run adventure in a new scene.
If interested, give me a shout.
PS. Humor moment of the day was at Mile 1.5 I hear "oh S......T", I look to my side and see Nate Timm staring down at a shoelace come undone. The rest is history.
PS2 It was great to see Allen, Peter, the "old man" and his kid, Chris Raabe and others, cheering the team on. thanks for coming out!

USATF Club XC Champs
Results from the meet today are below. The snow and mudd seemed to be a huge factor in the slow times from the race as a whole. With all of that in perspective, the guys looked like they ran real tough... They were not able to score as a team due to my absence. I feel terrible about it... I have been battling a hamstring injury that occurred late last week and on top of that came down sick wednesday night.... Some bad luck... not a shocker with my running career!
Good job fellas... Hope you had a fun time out there!

Check out the Chevy Chase Store
The new store is nice and close to the Capital Crescent Trail. For folks who live in Upper Northwest or Bethesda/ Chevy Chase this might be a good meeting spot for runs on weekday evenings other than Wednesday.
Want some inspiration?
I ran the Park City Marathon last year. It was quite the weekend. Actually it was quite the 23 hours. From the time I touched down until I left again I was not even in Utah for a full day. The trip was punctuated with a challenging but very nice marathon, a wonderful race director and staff and a great pasta dinner.
At the dinner, I was surprised to be asked to give an impromptu speech about Fiddy2. I graciously accepted even though my task was enviable. You see, I had to follow the planned speaker of the night who was not only an Olympian, but also good-looking, witty and charming. I might be one of those things and “Olympian” it ain’t.
Chris Waddell was his name and he wasn’t just an “ordinary” Olympian, if there is such a term. You see, in 1988 as a freshman ski racer at Middlebury College Chris broke his back in a freak accident on the hill. Two months later he returned to school and three days short of the accident's one-year anniversary he started skiing in a monoski. Less than two years after learning to monoski he was named to the US Disabled Ski Team. Chris remained a member of the Middlebury College Ski Team all four years, and captained the team his senior year.
Well, in speaking with Chris recently, I learned that he is tackling a new challenge. He plans to become the first paraplegic to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. You read that correctly.
Rather than have me describe it, check out the video here about Chris and enjoy.
And yes, I do rather enjoy writing blogs about people that make you feel like a whiner.
p.s. My current running streak has ended because I forgot my running shoes in my last hotel. Crap.

There is a race next Sat in dreaded Baltimore. Its a famous 5 miler called the solstice five miler. Its in a hilly park. Lets get a team together to run it. The Baltimore running clubs compete so we can go and throwdown.
I have used these races to one, have fun, and two get to know areas of the region I would not normally venture to.

Race Report - Jingle Bell Run/Walk 5k for Arthritis
Finally. After 6 years, 10 months, and 11 days I have finally won a race. I ran the Ellicott City Jingle Bell Run/Walk 5k for Arthritis on Saturday. It was a nice single loop course around a lake. I started off behind a kid from a local high school and passed him about 1000m into the race. I pulled away quickly and hit the mile in 5:07 and knew I had the race wrapped up at that point (plus the second place kid would get lost and inadvertently cut the course and be DQed). The last 2 miles I had some time to reflect on what it was like to end my streak of 65 consecutive losses. Life was very different back then. George Bush was moments away from being sworn in as the 43rd President, Alan Webb was moments away from running his first sub 4:00 mile in a city who's skyline was still defined by the twin towers, I thought Kordell Stewart was the answer at QB, and I had yet to try my first alcoholic beverage. I was a fearless and muscle-less 114 pound sack of bones with frosted blonde tips running his 3rd track race of his collegiate career. I didn't know that my 4th track race wouldn't come until 3 years later, after redshirting my first 6 track seasons. I had never heard of osteoporosis or plantar fasciitis or the thyroid gland, I followed my coach's orders with a blind faith, and I thought my victory on that day would be the first of many in a great career. I had alot to think about on Saturday during those final 2 miles. I mostly thought about how I started in this sport and why I continue to do this to my body. I enjoy being out there in the woods and escaping the world; I enjoy meeting new people and learning their story; and I especially enjoy seeing what I am made of. Granted, a 16:42 in a rinky-dink local 5k is not what you would call stellar, but after 65 consecutive losses I will take what I can get.

RACE REPORT
Congrats to all those who did the Gar-Williams half. Great training run.
I did something called the Metric Marathon(16.3 Miles) in Columbia, MD this am. I had no idea what to expect as I had neither tapered or done any thinking to prepare for this race. The most I did was make a decision to run 6 easy miles yesterday.
BACKGROUND:
Columbia is a nice scenic suburban community 15 miles northeast of the District. Lots of Hills were to be expected. Race was put on by the Howard County Striders.
RACE:
My friend Robert, wanted to run around 6:30 pace and I was thinking I might run with him for a few miles and then speed up.
Well, when the gun went off, some cats just flew out. There was this guy from Jake's college, maybe a senior or recent grad who took off with Steve Crane in tow. I found out after the race that the college kid pulled up lame at mile 14. Behind them were about 12 other guys and then me. I let them all go for about 2 miles and then I began to crank. Let me just tell you that this initial section of the course, along with next 10 miles or so is all hill. So, as time went on, I was able to gobble guys up until I was by myself in 4th with the 3rd place guy in eye--sight. From mile 6-10 it was 1,2,3, 4 and a bunch of dudes behind me.
At mile 10 or around there, this young guy sneaks up to my side. We run together with little surges here and there for the next 4.5 miles or so. At mile 15ish, we are neck and neck when out of nowhere, Chris Farley, comes bolting by. I did not hear or see him and it was just like, wooosh. Until that moment, I was totally content to milk it at a relaxed pace into the finish. However, when I saw Chris, I gave it 10 seconds of thought and then decided to give chase. I blew past my running mate and tried to catch Chris. I was sprinting as we he. I was gaining but he had opened too much of a gap and finished 6 seconds in front. Great tactical race on his part! I am a bit pissed at myself, though.
As for me, I finished 4th overall in 1:37 and some change. Good race considering the conditions.
I think Crane got the course record in 1:30 and something.
For those looking to kill their hammys and quads, this is one to try out. By far the toughest race in the area aside from the marathon and beyond distances. HILLS, HILLS and MORE HILLS.

Gar Williams 1/2 Marathon Photos
I was out at Belle Haven Park for the Gar Williams half, taking pictures for Washington Running Report. I'd rather be out there running but my hip flexor needs time to heal. At least photography lets me vicariously experience racing. Anyway...
...I know I saw Nate, Matt, Michelle and Mathias (might have been some more people I missed.) If you want to see your photos, go to my flickr page, http://www.flickr.com/gp/20120378@N02/3Pt1P7 . If you want a copy of your pictures, email me the file name and I'll send you a version without the digital watermark. (free of charge for my friends)

GRC Singlet
Max, Matt, or anyone who might have a singlet - can you please bring your GRC singlet to the group run tomorrow? We are in need of two singlets for our team race next weekend in Ohio.
I'll make sure it gets returned...and I'll even make sure it gets cleaned.
Thank you.

RACING AND CLUB GROUP THINK
YO,
Upon reflection(while on the stationary bike watching replays of Sanford and Son), I thought some about this club and racing and such.
I would appreciate other's insight on the matter of racing and training and who joins in participates and shares in the love.
I think, long term, that we should try and make this club and racing events open to all who dare and want to take part. No need focusing just on fast people. I no we do not exlcude others, at the moment, but alas, not many others venture to our little excursions.
I suppose, from my vantage point, its about all who join the fray and how they try and become better, no matter what their level.
This thought or way of thinking might not appeal to all but I think its a new way of expanding the club, training, racing events, etc.
thoughts, ideas from others?

Saturday Run
There's been a lot of chatter about a Saturday run. I propose the MD/DC line on Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park at 9am. http://tinyurl.com/23uqg3
I am going to run long...since I likely won't run at all on Sunday because I have to work a very long day. I'd like to combine both trails and road.

Also, myself and a buddy, Robert, are running something called the Metric Marathon next Sunday. It looks like a cool 16.2 mile workout in Columbia, MD. I have never run in that neck of the woods so I figured I would give it a try. Anyone else interested, check out this site http://www.striders.net

AFTER READING YOUR TRAINING JOURNALS ALL I CAN SAY IS
I am glad but also a little sad not to be in my 20s anymore. Upon reading these things, I am impressed by people's introspection and such.
MAX ON THE SOAPBOX----- In your 20s you are supposed to not know much about the world or yourself. Go out and find YOU and develop confidence and self acceptance, a career, some true love, etc.
In your 30s things begin to flatten out so to speak. You really could care less what others think about you and you are confident in core aspects of yourself and how you fit in with others, etc.
In my 20s I did not have running as a companion. I was an idealist and did other things entirely. So I really do not understand how some of you guys are so dedicated to something that is so time consuming. A 20 year old male has the energy and hormonal level that is pretty intense. I guess its better to run it off than drink, party, etc.
Anyway, its Thanksgiving and I am thankful for running, knowing you guys and other local runners, and loving every ounce of life that is given to me.
MAX OFF THE SOAP BOX
RACE REPORT
Ran the Turkey Trot 5 Mile race in Alexandria today. Totally hot(weather) and lots of beautiful women, too! The usual crew was out including Vanessa Hunter, Crane, Derik and Lisa Thomas and so on. I ran a conservative but strong race. Started out real slow and picked off people along the way. I think I came in 7 or 8 out of like, 2500 runners. Lots of post race chatter and fun. Saw Mike Wardian(not racing but tooling his kid around the area in a stroller).
Ran a few miles for a cool down and am happy.

TEAM RACES ON THE HORIZON
I know that Jason and Jake and a few others are trying to put together a team to run the cross country USATF race on the 8th of December. For those not doing that and want to something local, I am putting together a team for the 9th on Haines Point. Its a 10K, similar to the one we did for Veteran's Day. So far I have myself, Michelle and perhaps, Peter. Others are more than welcome.
As for the Boston Marathon, i am a go. Jason, if you are putting a team together, add me to it, please.
TRAINING UPDATE. No running today as I did a really boring 90 minute stint on the elliptical trainer where I watched some samurai movie with Tom Cruise. Movie was OK and made the indoor machine bearable.

Thanks to All
Just want to thank everyone for the good wishes for the Philly Marathon. I went out at the pace I wanted but ran into a hammy situation around 17 and ended up limping my way home...If I don't see you before the Thanksgiving Day, know that I wish you a happy holiday and hope everyone get all the tryptophan they need. PEOPLE SHOULD POST THEIR TRAINING
Please post your training. It might seem boring to you at times but it is where we are spending most of our running time. I think we all can learn a great deal from one another.
This weekend's results:
I'm blanking on Dane's last name, but I think he amassed 70 miles in just under 17 hours:
42 Dane Rauschenberg 86 M/31 35 16:39:57.75 14:17/M 70.000
I don't have anything about Jake and Matt up in Philly, though Jake should well be done and Matt is an 1:45 into it.

TRAINING
OK---Jason has convinced me that age is truly a thing of the mind and that I and others, over 30, are really whatever age we think we are. I will go with this.
As for training. Upon completing my rain run with Scott and Jason, I did a 12 mile fartlek run with Michelle and this guy who calls himself JARRIN, on Friday. Actually it turned out to be a 3 mile warm up and cool down with the 6 middle miles being fartlek. Nice run and we ran hard. 3 minutes on and 1 off. Michelle is still rounding into shape for her hard training coming up in January. I cannot imagine what it would be like to train for trials in the 5K and be considered one of the favorites. Thats lots of pressure! I am sure she will do fine though as she seems to be the most positive and happy person I have met in some time.
After the run, I was really tired and went back to work and then home. I drank a beer and ate some chicken and watched some old movie with Richard Prior and Gene Wilder. I made a commitment to get up at 6am on Sat and run with some folks in Great Falls. NOT HAPPENING. I overslept until 9:40am.
Finally..............
Got up and made French toast and read the paper. 20 Minutes later I was running up and down my favorite hill workout in Rock Creek Park, Ross drive. I did 6 back and forths(70 minutes) and was totally tired. So much so that I had to jog pathetically 2 miles back to my house.
Spent 20 minutes stretching and then commenced with the rest of the day.

Ultracentric in 30 hours
1. I was out on my last run of the week before Ultracentric the other day. Just an easy 5 miler. Even though the temps have been cooling lately today was gorgeous. It was about 60 degrees and the leaves are both changing and falling. I just got a new cell phone and could not figure out some of the features. SO, I figured I would swing by the store to ask them for assistance at the end of my run.
The run is over and I am heading home. I am about 100 yards from being done when I roll my ankle. No suspense, it doesn’t hurt. But if you are a runner you know exactly what kind of roll this is. I stepped on a grate or a rock or something and for a split-second and the ankle rolled underneath me. Then, through the grace of God, I did not roll it enough, was able to right myself and no damage was done. Sheer panic and “ohmygod” ran through my head but no damage.
2. Ultracentric occurs almost exactly to the day in my life that my father was in when he was crippled in a hunting accident. You see, I turned 31 in May of this year and the race is Nov. 17th. My father turned 31 in April (of 1974) and then on Nov. 15th of that year had the bullet of a .44 rip most of his left lower leg apart.
When I was running 52 marathons last year and had all kinds of questions as to why would I put my body through this when I did not know what it would do to me in the long run, I gave many different answers (all true). But one that was always in my mind was the fact that my father assuredly did not think, that at age 31, he would never be walking again. So, when I heard things from people like a triathlon coach in Canada (Barrie Shepley) who said what I was doing was actually BAD for the sport of marathoning, I steeled myself by knowing what I was doing was for me, the charity, and my family.
It is extremely ironic I am taking on this challenge at this exact time in my life. Only after signing up for the race did I realize the connection.
So this race is for my Dad.

GO ERNST
For all of you 20 somethings and any others, who read this blog, please give a shout to Matt, who is taking on the Philly marathon this weekend. Matt is a great runner and for someone in his late 40's, his committment and passion for the sport, is all the more impressive.
In one's 20's the body is still gold and can withstand torture and still come back. In the 30's it gets to be harder. In the 40's. it just gets worse and so on. Thus, Matt deserves all the more credit and for coming out and training and racing, etc.
GOOD LUCK!

YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE
ALL,
I am writing a little piece for publication about the importance of group running and how it leads to overall running improvement, both mentally and physically. Clearly the little group that has emerged here is a nice case in point. Without anymore of my usual over-wordiness, if interested in sending me a little snippet depicting your enjoyment or satisfaction with this little club, please do at Max.Lockwood@gmail.com . Please explain some things such as how it has helped improve your performance, the comradery you have enjoyed, the awesome feeling you get in Max Lockwood's presence(ooops) that slipped, etc. you catch my drift.
If you can, send me something in the next 4 or 5 days.
thanks and enjoy the holidays_______Max

TRAINING WITH GUSTO
I MET JASON(PHYCHO)DWYER AND SOMETIMES MIGHTY MUNRO AT THE STORE TODAY AT 7:30AM.
TO START IT OFF, I WOKE UP THIS AM TO THE INTENSE THUD SOUNDS OF HARD RAIN DROPS KNOCKING AGAINST MY WINDOW. I SAID, OOOOH, HOW I LOVE TO RUN IN THE RAIN. I MADE THREE CUPS OF INSTANT COFFEE AND DOWNED A JELLY DONUT, TOO BOOT. I PUT MY STUFF IN MY BACKPACK AND JETTED THE 4 MILES TO THE STORE. I FELT LIKE ONE OF THOSE GUYS I ALWAYS MAKE FUN OF WHO RUN AROUND DC WITH BACKPACKS ON. ANYWAY, I MET THOSE GUYS AT THE STORE AND THE REAL RUNNING COMMENCED.
CLEARLY, JASON HAD THIS RUN PLANNED AS HE HAD A SMIRK ON HIS FACE AS WE PROCEEDED TO SLOSH ON THROUGH ON THIS MUD/WATER INTENSE/RIVER RUN. JASON IS A TRUE WARRIOR! HE AND SCOTT REALLY BEGAN TO PICK UP THE PACE AND I WAS LIKE, MAN, I AM WAY TOO OLD FOR THIS. I SORT OF HOPPED CAUTIOUSLY ALONG AS THEY MOVED LIKE THEY WERE USED TO THIS SORT OF THING.
ANYWAY, THEY DROPPED ME AND THIS WAS FOR THE BEST AS I WAS CONTENT TO JOG AIMLESSLY AROUND THE TRAILS. I SORT OF LOST MY WAY FOR A WHILE BUT EVENTUALLY NAVIGATED MY WAY BACK TO RESERVOIR RD. AND THEN RAN BACK TO THE STORE WHERE WE ALL MORE OR LESS FINISHED AROUND THE SAME TIME.
TOTALLY A GREAT RUN AND AN ADVENTURE THAT MAKES RUNNING WORTH THE PAIN AND SUFFERING.
TOTAL RUN FOR THE DAY WAS 2HRS AND 10 MINUTES INCLUDING THE RUN TO THE STORE AND BACK.
I AM TIRED BUT STRONG.

JINGLE BELLS
Not to steal Scott's thunder(scott, please don't be mad), but I think we should do another throwdown on the 9th at Haines Point, as well. Its another Capital Running Company sponsored running event.
Allen, this time, you can win.
Jake, this is your opportunity to outkick Bert.
I will try to run 33:40, which will be a PR for me this year.
I will do my best to convince Michelle to run one for us. If in shape, I am guessing she can run under 34 minutes and get the course record.
Scott, this is your chance to prove your are indeed, not over the hill, at age 18 or whatever you are.
Anyone or everyone can run it, cheer, take photos, etc.

tempo on thursday
Hey folks,
I am looking to do some hill circuits on Thursday as part of a 11/12 mile run. This will be in the morning- say like depart at 7:45/8?
Nothing too killer as I hope to start a mileage increase up into the 80s.

RUNNING ADDICTION EXPLAINED
Believe me............
Before I was 30, I was normal. I went to parties, dated regular women, ate and drank with some degree of flaw and talked to regular people about normal, everyday subjects. When I came to DC, I found an interesting way to meet people was to go jogging. I would do this to get dates and such. Somehow, I began running faster. I met Ben Cooke one day on the Rock Creek Park trail and he convinced me to run harder and train and such. After this time(4 years ago), I started to run harder and run with serious runners. Since then, running has become too much and all encompasing. I love it but it has made me a different person, so to speak. For good and bad. Another path on my life journey, that's all.
Anyway, it was explained and put into context when I read ONCE A RUNNER. I started and finished it in two hrs at Starbucks, yesterday. Two hrs of reading explains the past four years of my life.
Who would have thunk running is so "ALL POWERFUL".
Interesting times ahead.

Ultracentric looms
Ultracentric, the 24-Hour Race, which also serves as the qualifier to be on the US National Team, is this Saturday. I am extremely excited, strangely confident and ready to run.
Timing for this race will be done by a company whose website can be found HERE. I am unsure if they will keep updated stats as the day goes on (and on and on) but please feel free to check in on me anytime you want. Chances are I will also check my cell phone a few times during the day, so go ahead and say hello as well.
I am a little perturbed the decent predicted temperatures of mid 60s from last week have given way to mid-to-high 70s this week. Damn it! I am only hoping that running at a much slower pace will mean that the sun won’t sap me as much. And hey, it isn’t the 98 degrees of the North Face 50k or 90 plus of the Old Dominion 100.
That said, I guess my confidence comes from my hard fought war this year with crappy racing conditions as well as my performance at the Presque Isle Endurance Classic in 2003 (84 miles; a total which no one has come close to matching in the 4 years it has been run since). (Pre and post race photos below. the first being me not knowing what I was getting myself into.)
Regardless, I am feeling good. Will I reach all of my goals? I rarely do. Mostly because I set so many that are usually out of my reach. But I am ok with that.
The clock keeps ticking and I am ready to run.

RACE REPORT
Not much to report, actually, about the race.
It went sort of like this................
Usual bizarre pre-race ritual. Woke up at 5:00am and watched COOL HAND LUKE(classic Paul Newman flick) and ate waffles with banna slices. Left the house at 7ish and ran to the race(5 miles). Got to the race at 7:45 and mozied on to the start line. Usual list of regulars were milling about. Race started and I ran my own race as I started out real slow and got stronger as the run went on. Two weeks after the Marine Corps I feel fine and am continuing to regain confidence in my hamstring(takes forever to heal). Anyway, the race kind of just went by. Most memorable moment was talking to Ryan Deak about his high-school exploits. After the race did an easy 4 or 5 mile cool-down. Not sure how long. Anyway, the grand total of miles for the day was approximatley 15 with 6.2 of it being a tempo.
Main focus is on some Spring marathon.
Legs finally feel really good, though. No limping or muscle problems that make me twinge, just tired. It has taken nearly one year for this butt/hamstring issue to die off.
Everyone else ran great. Nice to see Ben lacing em up.
Nice croud support from everyone. Dave O', I want your bike, where did you get it?

Skins game tomorrow!
I have been meaning to watch a game at the Rhodeside Grill for some time now. Their wings are tasty and on Sundays they serve brunch until 3pm... and it features an all you can eat waffle bar. It is probably a 1.5 miles from the store... and 2 blocks from courthouse metro. any are welcome to shower at my place- now that's what I talk about team bonding! my place is also 2 blocks away from the grill. I think it would be a fun, relaxing way to unwind and debrief about the race and talk about how good the skins are, especially in their planned, crafty move to lose by 50 points to the Pats so as to remain a sleeper team. Smart.

V-DAY RACE UPDATE
I saw that the mighty Gurmessa(new last name) is running on Sun. We need to get Wilson to battle him. Also, our team should win providing Ben returns as the Champ(just kidding Ben). Britton Stackhouse is on our team, as well. I do not know her but somehow she got on. Allen must have added her. There is a great photo of Bert on the runwashington website. This is Bert before he was seduced by the dark side and joined the Pacers:)

Saturday Run
I am running about 8 miles easy tomorrow morning at 9am from the store. I believe Max and Allen will both be in attendence for at least part of the run.

RACE ON SUNDAY
A FEW ITEMS
Big George from Pacers has put together a team. Looks like Crane, Big Bert, Baillie, and some others are signed up. I saw that one of Wilson's countrymen, Jared Nyomboki is signed up as well. Should be a steller race.
Dave, if you are not running and since you have offered to help out, can you bring a digital camera and take photos of me and others flopping around out there?
WHERE IS WILSON? C'MON WILSON, TIME TO LACE EM UP____

This is all over letsrun and other websites, but I thought I would post it here. Donations are being made in honor of Ryan Shay to his memorial fund. Send funds to:

My heart absolutely breaks for my former teammate, Alicia (Craig) Shay. I can't even imagine what she is going through right now. It certainly put a huge cloud over (as well as added some perspective to) what was a great day for Stanford AND American distance running with Ryan Hall's stunning performance.
That said, the one thing that we, her Stanford teammates, do not want right now is for Alicia to worry about money in this difficult time. Some of our former teammates have set up a system to provide financial support for Alicia. As the donations are being sent to her mother at their private address, I would prefer to keep that private. However, if you are able and would like to send a check to me, I can include the amount in a sum that I send to Alicia. Make the check out and send it to me (indicate on the subject line "Alicia Craig Fund"):

I also plan to run the Veteran's Day 10K this weekend and can collect anything there. I plan to mail the money out at the end of next week (Friday, November 16).
I always feel a bit guilty soliciting money from anyone, as I know everyone's financial circumstances are different, so please do not feel any kind of pressure here. Your thoughts and prayers are more than enough at this tough time. Thank you all!

Massage Info...
I'm sure that a lot of you may already know about this, but I just wanted to share this link to a really cheap massage opportunity, in case anyone is interested...
http://www.pmti.org/clinics/index.cfm
It's a massage school; offers discounted prices for an hour of work from a student or a slightly higher rate for time with a professional.
The weekend of Marathon watching was amazing. Living - temporarily- in the city was even more incredible! On Friday, I considered DC to be a raging metropolis. However, three days in NYC suddenly shrank this city down into the size of a very manageable town. It's nice to be back though! Hoping to see many of you on Wednesday!

RIP Shay
Shay next to friend and training partner Hall before the race this morning. They had run 4 miles together the day before in Central Park.
It's a very sad day for the American running community.
It's a very sad day for the American running community.
LIVE FROM NY
The trials were totally awesome. Chris Raabe ran a heck of a race. He was right up there for much of it and finished a very respectable 2:17 on a tough course. One of the best marathons I have ever witnessed. The crowds were great and I was able see the runners countless times because I could run back an forth and see them at different places on the loop. Wardian got his moment of fame by running the first 3 miles or so as the leader. Eventually though, he was sucked in. Eric Post ran well and I think Steve M, had a bit of an off day. Bottom line is he stuck with it and finished.
As for the top guys, I have to agree with Klim, he was on the ball, must be some brainpower up there:( Hall was the class of the field as he separated himself about mile 17 or 18 and never was challenged. Ran like the wind. Ritz was strong and Sell showed guts and gusto as he took 3rd. Khalid ran a heroic race considering his injuries an age. I think, he did not have the confidence to go with those young guys in the beginning and thus, waited too long to make a move. All of these cats are true WARRIORS in the end, though.

LIVE Trials
Here is the URL to watch the trials live.
http://www.mediazone.com/channel/nbcsports/2007/ingnycmarathon/index.jsp?utm_source=mzhpbutton_102507&utm_medium=button&utm_campaign=nycmar_mzhp
I won't be able to watch the race live because of this 5k I am doing so I am wondering if anyone will be taping NBC or the live stream on the internet? Any computer geeks know how to make a video file to view later?
I have a wedding to go to tomorrow afternoon, but would like to somehow watch the race before then.

Race Walking
I think many of us are in agreement that racewalking is the stupidest thing we have ever seen. Well, have you ever wondered what a racewalker would do if attacked by a gang of sword wielding ninjas? Would he racewalk away or flat out run away? The Japanese, known for their wonderful treadmill and human tetris game shows, are here to give us the answer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WFkCjQAltc

Weekend Runs
I'm not running on Saturday...rather racing a 5K.
I do plan to run 15ish on Sunday at Riley's Lock. If anyone is interested in meeting late morning (circa 10am)let me know. The route is designed in a way that those running can run 10-12 instead of 15. Two-thirds of the run is on trails/towpath, the remaining bit will be on some rolling roads.

More Marathon Stories
This guy ran at grandmas and his story was on ESPN. Only a 15 minute segment: http://trackandfieldphoto.com/DisplayNextJpg.php?061118_1628_0163_RLM
I'm not good at uploading photos, if you click on the image, you will see him with my alma mater's current stud, Don Letts. The photo was from cross nationals... a complete mud pit.
NY Times covers running
The NY Times has an article today on the Hansons-Brooks running team and all the guys they are sending to the marathon trials this weekend. They also have a video interview with Keflezighi and Abdirahman. Go here: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/31/sports/othersports/31marathon.html

Saturday Run
Does anyone plan on running tomorrow morning? I would like to run 10-12 but don't feel like treking down to the store for an 8:30am run. I'd love to meet somewhere else (DC or MD) around 9am.

Alternate Miles - Friday
I'm wondering if anyone is interested in doing a strength workout on Friday around 6 or so on the canal. The workout is called Alternate Miles and it was our break and butter at Florida State. It's basically a controlled tempo alternating mile paces. For example, 5:30/6:30/6:00/5:30/6:30/6:00. It's a tough, yet phenomenal workout. I'm hoping to get up to 10+ by January. Let me know if you are interested by posting here.

A RISING STAR
ALLEN, Great race yesterday. 24:45 would have gotten you the win any other day. Can't believe Gurmessa and his boys came all the way from NYC or wherever. Good competition brings out your best, though. Good job! ___________M

Tying the Knot
Shortly after the disastrous Army "11.3" Miler in 2005, DaveO first walked up to LT and started the conversation by asking, "What's that written on your hand?" (The answer was her goal time splits). Shortly after the disastrous Chicago Marathon, Dave had another question for Laura. A BIG question. This time, her answer was YES!
Yes, we will be walking (not running) down the aisle together. We are considering wearing our blue Brooks singlets as a sign of solidarity...but then again, maybe not.
-DaveO and LT (soon to be LO, or LTO, or LT-O....Ahhhhh!)
ADDITIONAL PARKING
As "I have found the fountain of youth" Ernst said, there looks to be an army of runners showing up. If you are running a little late, park at one of the multiple parking areas before the Beach Drive interface. This means park at the soccer field as you turn off East West Highway or at one of the multiple little parking lots on the left as you drive the mile or so up the road towards our meeting spot. Hope this helps. Also, Money, on a serious note, you need to let me know if you need a lift. _____later, M

Saturday Run
Any interest in meeting at the MD/DC line of Rock Creek Park (Beach Drive) this Saturday instead of the store? What is the consensus.
10-12 miles...at 8:30am.
CROSS TRAINING AND SUCH
Unless you have the genetic makeup of Wardian, which nobody does, don't overdue it with the running. I know its tempting, especially with competitive fires glowing. However, no need to run mega miles for 5 and 10K races. You can probably run 45 miles a week and do some other things and lose nothing. Take a few hrs a week to bike, use the eliptical, lift weights, do pilates, etc. Its especially key to work the core muscles. lower back and stomach.

I plan on getting in a 10 mile tempo run on Wed. leave from the store at 6 (so it doesn't get too dark) I would like to hit descending times, starting around 6:10 and bottoming at 5:30. (maybe something like 6:10, 6:00, 6:00, 5:55, 5:50, 5:50, 5:50, 5:45, 5:40, 5:30)

WHERE IS EVERYONE RACING?
I think Klim is going up Baltimore way. Carr, Dwyer, Melissa? You all are sort of like Knights of the Roundtable out for Holy Grail. Good luck!
BTW____Allan, unlike Mighty Munro, who is too lazy to meet his potential, you look like you are rounding into form. Go for it! Sorry Scott, you get a blast for going through the motions with the weekly massages and such but not putting the throttle into full gear. I know, fighting words but it makes life interesting.

ITS A BATTLEFIELD OUT THERE
I suppose nobody ever said Running was supposed to be fun or easy. Just make reference to Wilson's overly stated comments about "RUNNING NOT BEING A JOKE AND THAT IT IS VERY SERIOUS BUSINESS" I know we all used to make fun of this but it is clear there is merit in it.
Jake and Dave, your assignment is to take Laura and Melissa on much deserved vacations somewhere where running is not allowed. Massages, Scuba diving and good tropical drinks, only:(
Also, did anyone notice that super marathoner Dane ran Steamtown in 2:58! thats great---Good job Dane.
As for the Chicago Women's finish, why didn't anyone tell the leader to huff it with a 1/4 mile to go? Thats totally bizarre______M

marathon reports:
Steamtown. At mile 8, melissa was tied for 1st at around 6:05 pace (that's sub 2:40!). By the half Steve Crane was in the lead. My info is from jake at the race site.
In chicago, from the live update: Laura K Turner, 00:58:59 (net) @ 15K. Pace 6:19. Predicted 02:45:36. By The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. The pace is rather slow with the leaders. The men went through 9 miles at 5:05, the women at 5:50 pace. I have a report that it is already 76 degrees in the shade.

Darrell General runs Chicago
Most of you might not know of Darrell General, but when I cam to DC he was the best runner around. He has won the Army 10miler 3 times and marine corps marathon twice.
There was a great piece in the Washington Times about his attempt this weekend at Chicago, at qualifying for a 6th olympic trials. He is in his early 40s and this is not an easy thing to do.
He is a true running WARRIOR, as I like to put it. He juggles a bunch of jobs, has a family, wears knee pads, runs in the middle of the night and all for the love of running.
talk about grit and determination_______Good luck all and run well

Task: Title the picture on the left using the words "Laura Turner" and "Chicago". Can you guess the link?
Big weekend, I'm not even running but already getting excited. Kick ass $teve Money and Melissa Tanner.

Ben, for the "little shape" that he's in, crushed it today:
mile: 5:10 (2:56 recovery)
400: 69 (1:33 rec.)
400: 69 (1:52 rec.)
Mile: 5:00 (3:05 rec)
400: 69 (1:32 rec.)
400: 70 (2:06 rec)

400: 68 (1:48 rec)
400: 61 for Ben, 66 for me.
Not the best workout for me, but not too disappointed. Was up late studying for a test and had some stomach issues.

RUNNERS WORLD AND NEW YORK ROAD RUNNERS WEBLINK
For all those who might give a darn, Iron Mike Wardian is a featured runnner on the New York Road Runners website section on the trials. He is on the same list with some pretty lofty company. Also, Gene Mitchell, owner of the Running Company chain, is a featured runner in Runners World. He is one of the few "old guys" who made the trials. Interesting little write-up.
Other than Wardian, Chris Raabe, Steve Meinelt(former washingtonian) and maybe one or two other local men are running the trials. I am going to NYC to check it out and cheer them on.
Allen, regarding your earlier post on team races, there are a ton. Veteran's Day 10K is a real good one. I think we won it last year.
