We had to be happy with that- 2011 with the GRC

This year brought unprecedented growth and success for the GRC racing team, and in aggregate, its easy to forget that all of these great things happened in the past year. Sam Luff and Michelle Miller's copious contributions on and off the roads earned them MVP honors, and Ryan Witters and Anna Holt-Gosselin's consistent and compelling efforts made them clear rookies of the year.

Most importantly, thanks to a strong recruitment effort by coach Jerry Alexander, our membership swelled considerably. We added an entire women's team and welcomed back Laura O'Hara (LTO). The women's team now boasts Maura Carroll, Lisa "Chilly" Chilcote, Samantha "Kirby" Cole, Kristie Connelly, Kate Dart, Drea Garvue, Susan "Shendrick" Hendrick, Anna "Usain" Holt-Gosselin, Elizabeth Laseter, Michelle "The Butcher of Damascus" Miller, Christina Valerio, Beth Young, Elyse Shimada and just recently, Avril "East Canada" Ogrodnick.

The men's team grew too, most notably with the addition of Brian "Young Breezy," who has helped immensely with nickname generation. Matt "Hulk" Logan, Ryan "Witty" Witters and Jason "Shredder" Myers have intregrated well into the team, and we look forward to getting to now Clarke "Hairball" "West Canada" Lind and Will "Opie Cunningham" Rawson.

Sadly, we lost Matt Ernst, Jake Marren, Dirk de Heer, Carlos Hunt and Ian Hankins to the currents of life which took them elsewhere this year.

We also saw excellent additions to the staff at the Chevy Chase Running Company, Emily Norton and Lavar Curly.

And we had a lot of laughs along the way!!

Onto reminding you about things you might have missed:

January
Feeling fine, fast in flannel
Scott Koonce started the year off in style, PRing at the New Year's Day 5k.

Just terrible
The team did the absolute worst Sunday morning run ever on the Millennium Trail in Rockville, thanks to Jordan's first and last blog post.

Regulating his energy
Dave Burnham cruised to an easy victory in the Run to Read Half Marathon in West Virginia.

Ta ta, Ernie
Matt Ernst moved to Kentucky to pursue a life of Ironman training, horse racing and bourbon drinking.

Indoor magic
Ryan Hanson ran 15:04 at the Maryland Indoor meet.

February
West Coast Wiggy
Joe Weigner started his year with the USATF 12k cross country championships in San Diego, where he finished 50th.

Love makes people do crazy things, like run 8:23
Ryan Hanson set a team record for 3k at the Boston University Valentine Invitational.
Damned dirty apes!
Outlaw broke 15 at the Love the Run You're With 5k. Earns a free pair of shoes for beating Bert which he never was able to redeem.

Boy George
Brian Young found a penchant for bringing awful weather with him to races, and he did so at the By George 10k, where 30+ mph winds greeted runners full in the face twice. It blew, to say the least. Karl led a series of GRC runners across the line. Pies all around! Like President Washington, I cannot tell a lie, they were delicious.

March
Here's a little something 'bout an Outlaw like me, never shoulda been let out the penitentary
Jerry Greenlaw finished 48th at the Gate River Run in Jacksonville, which served as the USATF 15k championships.

Free Scores t-shirts!
Sam Luff won the Kelly’s Shamrock 5k with Dirk de Heer in pursuit. The GRC shows DC’s little sister Baltimore how running is done. Jake Marren returned to the racing scene.

Nice, gift certificates to the Glory Days Grill! What's that???
Karl Dusen set a team record when he runs 24:03 at the Van Metre Five Mile. Beth Young won the women’s race and some mad bank.

World Wide Web
Jimmy Daly debuted GrcRunning.com.

Before the sellout
Brian Young ran a 1:16 at the National Half Marathon for a big PR. Dickson led the team in 1:13. Wilson Komen placed third in the marathon.

April
A great month for the team
The GRC made the Cherry Blossom race one to remember, with six men breaking 52 minutes and Michelle Miller taking seventh overall for the women. A bevy of PRs resulted, with Karl finishing just a hair over 50 minutes. The mens team crushed Pacers in the team competition. Big races from Lyndsi Jerdonek and Beth Young gave Michelle a lot of backup in showing the rapidly-growing women's team is to not something with which to trifle. Future GRC runners Elyse Shimada and Lisa Chilcote took notice. You can relive the thrill by watching this video.
Panther on the prowl
Mike Cotterell finished eighth at the steamy St. Louis Marathon.

Rocking the suburbs
Great conditions helped push four GRC runners to PRs at the Pike's Peek 10k in Rockville, with Wiggy leading the charge in 30-friggin-40. Dickson, Wertz and Tender also hit their best marks. Michelle led the women, including Emily Dusen making her comeback race. Wilson ran 30:18.
JARRIN - DNS
Robert Jarrin made a daring, but successful, early morning trip from Boston to Washington to attend to the birth of his daughter, the appropriately named Iris Hopkinton.

Bain finished his 13th Boston in 2:37:30, the same time as GRC alumna Caroline Whitem with Scott Koonce in 2:53. Koonce ran the 5k the day before with his daughter, Charlotte.

Shattered Glass
Breezy's hometown performance at Toledo's Glass City Half Marathon, just under 1:17, showed that his improvement in long distances is here to stay.

Luffington, Luffington,
4 foot nothing and he's packing a gun,
He can't get a date and he cheers for Penn State,
he's fluffy, he's fluffy, he's fluffy
Luff Daddy had one hell of a week, running 14:15 at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational 5k and 30:14 in the middle of the night at the Penn Relays. Hanson ran 14:41 at Penn.

DJJJJJJJJJJ
Big City ran his annual race, hitting 1:55 for a team record in the 800 at the Shippensburg Invitational. Unfortunately, iPods weren't allowed at the race, but he managed to get by on the memory of the beats to the  California (of Pennsylvania) Raisins rendition of "I Heard it Through the Grapevine."

May
Poetic justice
In his first race in a year, Jake Klim blew away the field at the Race for Hope 5k in downtown Washington, running 15:57 in memory of his old friend and MCRRC mentor, Rob Magin.

The North didn't win the Civil War, Dickson Mercer won the Civil War
Dickson cruised to victory in the inaugural Gettysburg North-South Marathon in 2:37. I'm not sure why he's so surprised it came out that way, though...

Frankly, that's a good race
Frank Fung took a big step forward when he broke the three-hour barrier at the New Jersey Marathon.

Run here while you can...
Wiggy runs 3:55 to win the 1500 at the Kehoe Twilight Meet at the University of Maryland, with Hanson close behind. The world gets the terrible news a few months later that the Maryland athletic department shortsightedly plans to cut the track teams.

Then I stole his phone and sent illicit texts
Wiggy ran a fierce second mile (9:09 3200 split) in his PR 5k effort at the Swarthmore College last chance meet- 14:34, with Karl in 14:30. Dave Wertz set a big 5k PR in his first race ever on the track at age 35.

Tender isn't afraid of the guy in the wrestling singlet
For two reasons: 1) the guy isn't Dave Wertz 2) Andy ran away from him easily to win the Run for the Animals 5k.

Ahead of the Pack(ers)
Beth Young set a half marathon PR in Green Bay, apparently after her brother brought gale-force winds with him, which influenced her to forgo the full.

That might be enough to earn a live Q&A with the Washington Post
Lindsee Jerdonek friggin won the Columbia Triathlon. The whole thing! Matias finished second in the amateur race.

Brides and grooms everywhere!
Chris Bain married Shannon O'Neill and Jake Marren married Ella Thodal.

June
They found the cure for obesity, at least
Michelle Miller and Wilson Komen won the National Race for the Cure.

XTREME SUCCESS
Wiggy and prodigal daughter LTO led the GRC team to a victory National Press Club 5k, which is later overturned by some questionable political work by a group of mercenaries who I believe do not represent the best interests of the field of journalism. Wiggy declined a pushup challenge from Tony Horton.

I don't know what this actually means
Matias finished 8th over at the Eagleman Triathlon. It involved swimming, going for a bike ride and jogging.

Grandmamas' boys
Diddy continued his MVP year leading the team at the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon in Minnesota, with Karl and Tex close behind. The little ball of fury ran 1:07:08 for his debut half.
Come for the cupcakes, stay for the chance to be in a video
Kate Dart won the Father’s Day 8k and Dave Burnham finished second for the men, ahead of the race’s largest crowd.  See Snowpath Productions' video here.

HOT POT OF COFFEE!
Wiggy headed back west for the Rock and Roll Seattle Half Marathon, where he ran 1:09.

July
Burly Man
Jason Myers set a huge PR at the inaugural All-American Time Trial 5k at Bethesda-Chevy Chase's track, earning the admiration of a certain cousin of a GRC runner shortly after.
Hot and sticky track
Tex showed he's not all about the marathon by running 4:24 to lead the GRC men at the Mid-Summer's Night Mile. The Red Fox ran his second race in two months and hit 4:27.

Undone by a technicality
Despite Texas Paul,Wilson and Dutch Paul going 6-7-8, and Lyndsay and LTO 9th and 11th, a registration snafu handed the GRC's team title to Falls Road Running at the Rockville Twilight race.

WHY EVEN KEEP HAVING RACES NOW?
Several idiots ran the Crystal City Twilight race, which featured no vampires but plenty of undead afterward. Participants blamed the bad weather on Breezy, something the race certainly wasn't, at 99 degrees (estimated conservatively).

Dirk departs, with difficulty
The dutchman packed up his running shoes, wife, cat and chihuahua into his BMW and drove off to Flagstaff.
August
What was that?
Competitors at the Friends of the W&OD 10k are left speechless when Anna Holt-Gosselin destroyed the field. Rumors started swirling that there was a new gunslinger in town. Lisa Chilcote set a PR at the Omega Centennial 5k.

Witty creates GRC racing team
According to the Princeton (Ind.) Daily Clarion, Ryan Witters reportedly started a training group in Washington, D.C.

Dylan Keith is a wild animal
In case he's not on your gchat list, be assured that still is the case.

Ural in big trouble
Outlaw's apparently brilliant, but erratic, strategy helped him vanquish both the Red Fox and Young Breezy during a heated game of Risk deep in Madison County, Va. during the 2011 GRC Training Camp. Then the football team came and beat them all up.

A marriage made in the pages of Triathlon magazine
Matias and Katie wed.

She ran for Jerry
LTO wons the NOVA Run for Jerry 5k in Bluemont Park. Suffice to say, this photo is not of Bluemont Park.

September
Speak softly and carry a big kick
Anna Holt-Gosselin showed the DC area what she can do at the Kentlands 5k. She then threatened Chris Bain, telling him she wants the nickname Silent Thunder. Young Breezy diffused the situation by bestowing the nickname Usain Holt on her.

Michelle broke the statue because it did not pass muster
The GRC won again, this time at the Run, Geek, Run! 8k. Witty and Usain led the way with overall victories.

Just pay the guys already!
Karl and Kate put up great times at the Rock and Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon. Dusen ran 1:06:54 and Dart speeds to 1:20:19, with Tex hitting 1:09:30. Amanda Rice ran an outstanding 1:14:39, despite stopping to extract three people's impacted wisdom teeth along the way. Logan ran 1:12:04 and Dickson 1:12:11.

It's Witty who sets the pace in this Arlington neighborhood
Witters proved he's the big dog when he won the Pacers' Clarendon Day 5k.

Smoke 'em
The GRC men won Pittsburgh's Great Race 10k, with Sam leading the charge in fourth and Laura O'Hara finishing fifth among women.

October
Running through Antietam? That's more of a Klim move...
Charlie Ban got the half marathon monkey off of his back at the Freedom's Run races in Maryland, and shortly after died of the common cold.

Back to Minnesota
Minneapolis Paul ran 2:30:34 at the Twin Cities Marathon.

The Butcher of Damacus pillages the Wilson Bridge
Michelle destroyed the other Americans and finished third overall in the Wilson Bridge Half, running 1:19:42.

The Army Ten Miler
Diddy and Usain once again headlined great races for the GRC, this time at the Army Ten Miler. Wertz hit a big PR (just look at how much fun he's having!), and Amanda Rice kept her great fall going with a 57:16.

Don't get in the way of his jaw
Karl ran 2:26:26 to clock the fastest GRC marathon in 2011 in Chicago, then celebrated by gobbling up Peeps at Ruth's house.

He outpaced Load Reinhart
Matt “Hulk” Logan had one heck of a week, PRing in a second place finish of 2:33:31 at the Grand Rapids Marathon, and marrying Emily Keller the next Saturday. The race had a special significance, taking place in the town where the couple met while attending Calvin College.

Jack Manner, signing off
Jake Marren (left) and Ella (not Jarrin) depart Northwest Embassay Row for Vermont. On the way to his goodbye picnic, Towpath apparently drove through a chicken coop, by the looks of the amount of chicken he brought with him.

Engineering some success
Ryan Witters and Maura Carroll stuck gold with big PRs at the GTSI Charity 5k, with Maura winning in 17:58 and Witty comfortably breaking 15 in 14:51.

Shend-rick
Susan Henrick sent 'em at the AIDS 5k.

He's back, and running in a straight line
Jimmy "Dizzy" Daly made his comeback to racing after a debilitating bout with vertigo in the spring. He unluckily chose to race in freezing rain and snow... That guy can't catch a break...

Thank God the snow stopped!
Brian Young snapped his bad luck with weather streak and ran a two-minute PR in fantastic conditions at the Marine Corps Marathon, escorted by Charlie Ban, Patrick Murphy and Chuck Kacsur. Lavar Curly fought some fierce knee pain during the race.

November
Something Witty
Ryan Witters debuted his blog. Observer had high hopes for it, but it turned out to be updated only slightly more than DC/Maryland TAKE TWO!!!!

I don't think he cares about adding any new states to his marathon list
Chris Bain ran 2:34:43 at New York. Pat Hughes shook off a great deal's worth of a year of injury frustration to get through the race.

Homecoming hurryup
Charlie Ban dusted off his eight-year-old 8k PR in time to shatter it at the Richmond Marathon's HCA Virginia 8k in 25:19. Jason Myers shredded his own PR by 20 seconds. Unfortunately, a strong elite field ensured neither GRC runners won any Dolla Billzzz.

Another GRC win at clubs tuneup
Strong races by Diddy, Witty, the Predator (Hanson, remember, we all voted on that?) and Usain led to a team championship at the Veterans Day 10k. Maura ran a solid 10k debut.

His 75th straight win there
Patrick Murphy won the MMRF 5k for about the fourth straight time. He goes on to run two solid 8ks over the course of five days, a harbinger of a strong fall for him.

The City of Brotherly love showed its affection for our sisters
Dart and Drea walked away from the Philly Marathon and Half with big PRs. Someone get me a photo, please.

December
National Class
The GRC's team performances at the USATF Club Cross Country meets were not marked by the great performances by Diddy, Witty, Usain and Maura, but by the sacrafices made by  athletes to ensure our teams scored. Breezy came off the bench, shortly after a marathon a little more than a month before, to help the men's B team finish 39th, and Lisa Chilcote selflessly removed herself from the masters race to help the women's team finished 19th. Murphy unleashed a vicious kick at the end of the race that left Shredder Myers aghast.
The men's A team finished 16th.

Man from Massachusetts rides off into sunset
Jake Klim retired after five years of coordinating GRC operations, plans to spend more time with his family of birds, a dog and, ooooh, ith a lady! Sam Luff replaced him on the very hypothetical "board of directors," and by this photo, you can agree that very little will change. His dedication to the team only intensified as he battled 19 months on injury, which, somewhat fortuitously, gave Emily a reason to talk to him. The only time you heard him complain as he toted water bottles, coordinated team activities or captured extra footage for videos was when he noted that my bicycle had no breaks.

Shamrock 5k Registration Open

REGISTER TODAY for the Shamrock 5k in Baltimore. The price goes up soon and this race is guaranteed to sell out.

Cool interview w/ Caroline White

I'm sure a lot of you might've seen this by now but thought I'd share anyway... a pretty neat interview with friend of GRC Caroline White, who qualified for the Trials at Boston earlier this year. Oh, she flies F-15 Strike Eagles too.

Seattle Recap & Wednesday Workout

From Coach Jerry:

Before I get to my witty and insightful review of Clubs, let me address a couple of other points: 1) I will be at BCC on Wednesday for whoever wants to do a workout, but it will be a small crowd. Everyone who ran Clubs with the exception of Lisa should plan to sit this one out and take a few days (or longer in some cases) to recover. But for those of you who are working your way back into shape (I'm thinking Clarke, Will, Beth, Elizabeth, Christina, Avril, Drea) or who are racing in January (Kirby), a workout makes sense. Please give me a holler if you expect to be out there, and we can figure out a plan. 2) Don't forget about the big TEAM MEETING on Saturday. The plan has changed slightly--the meeting will be at the Chevy Chase store at 6 pm. Full details will follow in the next few days, but we have some very important running and administrative issues to discuss, so if you're getting this email, please plan to be there. 3) Congrattulations to Dickson and Elizabeth for their fine races at Jingle Bell 8k yesterday. Dickson is looking strong in the calm before the coming storm of Boston prep, and Elizabeth continues to make good progress towards race fitness. And let's not forget Kirby, who ran the race as part of her long run, and still ran 32:20. Well done.

As for Clubs, in my view it was an unqualified success. I was really, really pleased to field three full teams, and because each of our athletes knew that he or she would be a scoring member of the team, everyone ran with a larger purpose in mind. I can say with complete confidence that every one of our athletes ran as hard as they could on Saturday, and I can't ask for anything more than that. It was really special for me to be out there with such a wonderful group. I'm already looking forward to next year, when we'll be at full strength.

Speaking of next year, our athletes learned several valuable lessons this weekend that will serve us all well in the future. Those lessons include: Paul learning that his bib number is of much more use on his jersey than in his hotel room when the gun goes off; Charlie learned not to make any threatening or provacative moves anywhere near Dave Wertz when Dave has been drinking (as Charlie aptly put it later, "Wiggy has wanted to kick my ass for years, but Wertz actually did it"); Witty learned that no matter how fresh his spikes are, he's not going to run fast in them for the last 4 loops of a 5 loop race if he runs the first loop at a suicidal pace; Laura learned that despite the fact that I bear only a passing resemblance to George Costanza, I am sometimes called Jason Alexander; Jason learned that pizza hut will deliver 2 pizzas, bread sticks, and wings, in one box, right to his door if he calls and asks them to; Anna learned former Olympic marathoners tend to give very bad training advice when they've been drinking for 4 hours straight; and Karl learned that it's wise to befriend the guy who donated the beer to USATF. If we keep all of these important lessons in mind, we're a lock to have 2 teams in the top 5 next year!

Stay tuned for details about the meeting on Saturday.

2012 Race Calendar

Someone was kind enough to create a 2012 Race Calendar on the "GRC SPREADSHEET" link on the right hand side of the blog. Everyone should please add in the races they intend to run on the calendar so that we can formulate, well in advance, who is running which races when. I just did mine and it took only 2 minutes. This won't by any means be final, but it will help determine which races have momentum behind them and which races might require coordination with travel.

Thanks.

It's a big team, so don't feel shy about your name sharing a spreadsheet cell with someone else's.

Dickson 5th, Laseter 6th at Jingle All the Way

More good results from the weekend as Dickson Mercer places 5th in 26:18 and Liz Laseter is the 6th woman in 31:03 at the Jingle All the Way 8k. Race venue and distance both changed after the 10k became too crowded for the previous location, Hain's Point.

Read Dickson's race report HERE

Beastman -- 1:07:30 in Tucson!

Beloved GRC ex-pat Dirk de Heer ran about a 1:07:30 in the Tucson Half-Marathon yesterday, good for 2nd overall. Came through mile 10 in 50:25 -- and "easily," he remarked. An 8-second PR for The Dutchman, who hasn't even begun to step up his training.

BATTLE IN SEATTLE!

PHOTO - a seaplane carrying the GRC Race Team prepares to touch down in Seattle on Friday in advance of the USATF National Cross Country Championship.
**check the GRC Twitter feed for updates**

WASHINGTON, DC –

On Saturday, The Georgetown Running Company Race Team will compete in the USATF National Club Cross Country Championships at the Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle, Washington. The men sent an incomplete team to Columbus, Ohio in 2007 to compete in the mud, but sent a full team to Lexington, Kentucky in 2009 and to Charlotte, North Carolina last December. This will be the first time the women have sent their own squad to compete.

Running clubs and racing teams from all over the country compete in this annual throw down. Although there are cash prizes for the top 5 teams in each division, teams largely battle it out over hill and dale for bragging rights. After college, there are few events in which team racing is still revered and this is arguably the race that illustrates who the best post-collegiate racing team in the United States is.

GRC's women's team will make it's long-awaited debut on the national stage. The team has grown into a burgeoning national power in 2011. In fact, almost all of the women who will compete for GRC joined the team this year. The lady harriers will be led by Anna Holt-Gosselin, who has made a huge impression on the DC running scene since her graduation from MIT in the spring. Anna has run extremely well this fall at distances from 5k to 10 miles, and she will be ready to compete for a spot in the top 30.

"As well as Anna has run this season, I've been holding her back until now, but the shackles are off and she's peaked and ready to go in Seattle”, said GRC Coach Jerry Alexander, "this meet will be a big step up in quality for her, but Anna is a fearless competitior and she's going into the race expecting to run very, very well."

Anna will be supported by two runners who are very experienced on the national level, Laura O'Hara and Susan Hendrick. O'Hara was a standout cross country runner in high school who twice qualified for the Footlocker High School Cross Country Championships. She continued her stellar career at Stanford and this level of competition will not phase her in the slightest. And although Susan focused on the mile during her record-setting career at Columbia, she has had a lot of success in cross country and she is ready to run.

Maura Carroll, a 2011 graduate of Cornell, took some time off after track season and got a relatively late start on her fall training, but she has run big PRs at 5k and 10k despite her truncated training, and she will be ready to run hard on Saturday.

The final scoring member of the team is Lisa Chilcotte. Chilcotte is a masters athlete who is taking one for the team by running in the open race to provide a fifth scorer. She would have had a great shot to place in the top 10 in the masters race, and while she will be selflessly competing against women younger than her, Chilcotte will be very competitive on Saturday.

The men’s team is looking to improve on its 14th place finish in 2010. Sam Luff, who is coming off a breakout track season during which he set new GRC club records in the 5,000m (14:15) and 10,000m (30:13) will lead the charge. Sam’s sole focus this fall has been Clubs, and he is ready to compete for a spot in the top 40. GRC newcomer Ryan Witters, a 2011 graduate of the University of Evansville, will be on Sam’s heels. Ryan has run big PRs of 14:53 for 5k and 31:17 for 10k on the roads, and will be ready to go on Saturday.

"Sam and Ryan are both looking great”, explained Alexander, “Luff’s training has been right on schedule this fall, and after several strong tune-up races on the roads, he is ready to make a splash on the national scene in Seattle. ‘Witty’ has been a fantastic addition to GRC, and he has gone from hoping to make the A team at Clubs to our clear number two man this fall. This meet is a big step up in quality for Ryan, but he is a tough competitor who will not back down from the challenge."

Karl Dusen and “Texas” Paul Guevara will compete despite running fall marathons. Karl has had a disappointing season as he was supremely fit and ready to qualify for the Olympic Trials but was done in by warm weather in Chicago (2:26). Karl is not completely recovered from the illness that thwarted his chances of taking a second bite at the apple in Philadelphia and Sacramento, but he is a consummate team player who will do his best to help his team in Seattle. "Karl was very, very unlucky this fall”, said Alexander, “there was no doubt that he was fit enough to run 2:19 in Chicago, but the marathon is a cruel sport, as the conditions are always a huge factor that is completely out of the athlete’s control.” Dusen, who ran a PR 1:06:54 at the ING Philadelphia Half Marathon in September, is the unquestioned leader of this team, and he is running Seattle despite his lack of race fitness because he would not even consider letting the team go to a championship meet without him so long as he was capable of finishing. “Despite his misfortune this fall, I predict with confidence that Karl will be back better than ever in 2012. Paul is fully recovered from his fall marathon (2:30 at Twin Cities), and he’s on the way back to race fitness.” Tex is a very experienced cross country runner, having competed in two NCAA Championships while running for the Crimson Tide of Alabama. There is no doubt he will bring his Texas swagger on Saturday.

The A team is rounded out by Charlie Ban and Dave Wertz. Charlie has had a breakthrough season, running a huge 8k PR of 25:19 in Richmond last month, and he is ready to bring his “A” game for the A Team. Dave will undoubtedly be the oldest rookie at Clubs, because at age 36 this will be his first cross country meet ever. Dave made a successful debut last spring, running 15:30 for 5k in his first track meet, and he will look to replicate that caliber of performance in Seattle.

GRC will also field a full B team be led by Andy Sovonick, Jason Myers, and Patrick Murphy. They are determined to prove that they can beat several other clubs’ A teams. Andy has spent the last several weeks training exclusively for running after the completion of his triathlon season, and he appears ready to reap the reward of his singular focus. Jason is a 5k specialist who is not particularly comfortable at 10k, but he has trained extremely well this fall and will be competitive in Seattle. Because of his imposing size, he’s also the team bouncer, which may come in handy on Saturday night. Murph has also had a solid fall and will look to improve on his 2010 finish at Clubs as he begins his buildup for a big PR at Boston in April.

The B team is rounded out by Jimmy Daly and Brian Young. After a serious illness earlier this year, Jimmy is fortunate to be running at all, let alone racing in a national championship. Jimmy’s PRs are on par with his B team colleagues, and with a few months of uninterrupted training, he will be able to improve on those PRs this spring. Brian is new to this level of competition, and he’s not yet fully recovered from the Marine Corps marathon, but he will give it his all on Saturday.

MORE: GRC ex-pats Patrick Reaves and Kyle Smits will also be competing for their respective club teams.

Flash results will trickle in and be posted here around 5:16PM EST on Saturday.

TUESDAY Pre-Natty's Workout

From Coach Jerry:

We'll meet tomorrow, TUESDAY, for the final pre-clubs workout at BCC. My reccommendation for the workout is as follows: A Group 6 x 400 w/ 400 jog, 2 @ 68, 2 @ 66, 2 @ 64; B Group 6 x 400 w/ 400 jog 2 @ 70, 2 @ 68, 2 @ 64; Women 6 x 600 w/ 400 jog 2 @ 78, 2 @ 76, 2 @ 74, but I'm flexible on this. If anyone has a particular pre-race workout they'd like to do, let me know. And we can also make adjustments within the framework of this workout, so that B groupers may run with the A group if you like. The point of this is simply to get out there and turn your legs over to get that last bit of pre-race sharpness. We'll get going at 7:15 as usual.

For those of you who are not running clubs but want to come to the track, we can figure out an alternate workout, so give me a holler.

Please plan to attend the team meeting on December 17, details of which will be forthcoming.

Andy and/or I will be sending a detailed logistics message regarding clubs soon. If you have any questions, give me a shout. See you tomorrow

Workouts for the Week of 11/28-12-3

From Coach Jerry:

We had many excellent performances over the weekend from our Club Nationals crew. Rather than focus on the athletes who were tuning up for big performances in Seattle, I want to comment on two runners who will not be running Clubs and from whom I expect big things in 2012, Jake and Elizabeth. Jake has been trying to recover from a serious injury for more than a year, and after months of taking two steps forward and one step back, he is on the verge of being healthy enough to resume full training with an eye towards being race fit in the spring. During his lengthy recovery, Jake has shown incredible determination to return to action, and has continued to perform his time-consuming, often thankless role as GRC captain. If there is justice in the running world, Jake’s dedication to the sport and the team will pay off in 2012, and his successful return to racing without having done any track workouts in 6 months portends more excellent results from him in the future. In contrast to grizzled GRC veteran Jake, Elizabeth made her GRC debut on Thursday after a successful collegiate career at Johns Hopkins. Elizabeth has a world of potential and she’s ready to work extremely hard to make the transition to road racing after focusing on the 1500 and steeple in college. I’m excited to see what she can do with a few months of training under her belt.

A couple of administrative notes before we get to the workout for the week:

1) We will practice on Saturday morning at the cell tower field, likely at 9:00 a.m. If you’re running Clubs, you want to be there if at all possible (but everyone is welcome). And if you’re running Clubs, you do not want to do a long run on Sunday. I want everyone rested and ready to roll in Seattle, so we’ll get in some work on the grass on Saturday, and after that we’ll be in taper mode.

2) The workout next week, which will be short and sweet, will be on TUESDAY night at BCC to accommodate our race/travel schedule.

3) Don’t forget the team meeting on December 17 at 5 pm in a bar-to- be-named-later in Bethesda. If you’re getting this email, I’d like you to be there if at all possible, as we will be discussing some pressing training/racing and administrative matters that are of concern to all of you.

The workout on Wednesday will be our last hard session prior to Clubs and we’re going to get after it. The men will do 4 x mile with a 3 minute recovery. The A group will go 5:00, 4:50, 4:40, 4:30; the B group will go 5:15, 5:05, 4:55, 4:45. The women will go 3 x mile with a 3 minute recovery in 5:40, 5:30, 5:20.

If you have any questions, give me a shout. See you Wednesday at BCC

MONDAY workout & Weekend Wrap

WEEKEND WRAP:

Congratulations to Kate, Drea, and Michelle for their performances in Philadelphia.

Kate ran a huge PR of
2:53:20, cutting over six minute off her previous best. Kate has had a spectacular 2011, running significant PRs at every distance. In the last two years Kate has transformed herself from an average local runner to elite status. Kate is only starting to scratch the surface of her talent, and there is every reason to believe that Kate will continue to make dramatic breakthroughs in the future as she develops the confidence to believe that she can compete at the highest level. I could not be more pleased with Kate’s performance yesterday, and I’m excited to watch her continued progression!

Drea also ran a huge PR of
1:21:06, knocking over 80 seconds from her previous best. Drea ran aggressively early on, setting a new 10k PR en route, and not surprisingly, she paid the price later in the race, but fought to the tape and held on for an excellent result. Drea was quite disappointed that she was not able to run Chicago due to a nagging injury, but this performance was certainly a nice consolation prize. With a full season of injury-free training in the spring, Drea will continue to develop into a runner to be reckoned with!

While Michelle did not meet her goal of qualifying for the Trials, she proved to me this season that she has a great future in the marathon. Her training was superb, and had she been fully healthy on race day (which she was not), there’s no doubt in my mind that she would have qualified with time to spare. Not to belabor the point, but Michelle is a national-class marathoner waiting to happen, and despite (or perhaps because of) this setback, she will be back with a vengeance when the qualifying window opens for 2016.

Well done to all! And good luck to everyone who is racing
on Thursday. I expect more great results to report next week.

Because of the holiday this week, Coach Jerry has the following workout scheduled on MONDAY at BCC. Meet in the parking lot at 6:30 for the warmup. From Jerry:

We'll be on the track this week on MONDAY because of thanksgiving races. We'll try to roll at 7:15 as normal. Everyone is doing a 4-3-2-1, with a 3 minute recovery on all of it. The A group will go 72s, 70s, 68s, 64. The B group will go 74s, 72s, 70s, 66. The women will go 84s, 81s, 78s, 74. Looking ahead, we will not meet again until the Wednesday after Thanksgiving, Nov 30, at which point we'll be 10 days out from Clubs, and we'll work hard at that workout. We'll come back the following Saturday, 12-3, at the cell tower field, and we'll have one final light sharpening workout either Tuesday or Wednesday the week of clubs. We're looking great, and we'll be ready to go in Seattle. And please mark your calender for the team meeting on Saturday, 12-17, at 5 pm in Bethesda at a bar to be named later.

Miller to Attempt OTQ in Philly

FLASH: Patrick Murphy runs 26:39 at Rothman 8k in Philadelphia this morning.

Sunday promises to be a red-letter day for the
GRC women. Michelle Miller and Kate Dart are running the marathon while Drea Garvue is running the half. Michelle is planning to make a major splash in her marathon debut, and is shooting for the Olympic Trials B standard of 2:46.

"Michelle's preparation could not have gone better", said Coach Jerry, "she has hit every single workout at or below the target times, and has stayed well within herself even while running some very hard workouts. Her tune up races went great, and I have every reason to believe that she will qualify. I take nothing for granted, but I am extremely optimistic that she will get the job done, with some time to spare."

Alexander continued "Kate is also in amazing shape. Throughout this training cycle, I've had to keep reminding myself that Kate's PR is a relatively modest
2:59, because the way she's been training, she has sub-2:50 written all over her. Kate is ready for a major, major breakthrough on Sunday.

"Drea is ready to take a huge chunk off her current PR of
1:22:30. She's been with Michelle and Kate every step of the way in training, and after running some very impressive sharpening workouts in the last 2 weeks, I expect Drea to take a real shot at sub 1:20."

Charlie Ban looks to continue his solid fall season while running the half marathon and Scott Koonce will be running the full 26.2 for the GRC.

Weekend Runs

SATURDAY:
OPTION A: 8:15AM @ CELL PHONE TOWER FIELD
From Coach Jerry: "let's shoot for starting the workout at 9, which means meeting for the warm up at 8:15. We'll run intervals, and the way I'd like to do it is to use a designated loop that will be somewhere in the 1k range. I've tried to explain in writing how we can do this once today already, and despite the utter simplicity of the plan, the written version is almost incomprehensible, so I will spare you my ramblings. Suffice to say that the men will do 8 x loop, and the women will do 6 x loop. As always, we will run a progression, so the men will do 2 x loop @ x time, 2 @ loop at x minus 5 seconds, 2 x loop @ x minus 10 seconds, 2 x loop @ x minus 15 seconds, all with a 2:30 rest. The women will 2 x loop @ x, 2 x loop @ x minus 5 seconds, 2 x loop @ x minus 10 seconds, also with a 2:30 rest. As mysterious as this may sound, all will become clear on Saturday."

OPTION B: GEORGETOWN STORE @ 9:00AM?
Will anyone be there?

SUNDAY:
TBD. Anyone want to run long at Old Angler's Inn?

Save Maryland Men's Track/XC and Swimming and Diving

GRC,

It's with sad news I report the pending demise of the college track and cross country teams at the University of Maryland--alma mater for both me and current GRC athlete Danielle Siebert. Pending presidential adoption of a report released yesterday, eight total sports stand to be cut from Maryland's athletic department, affecting 166 student-athletes and countless alumni who have come through the school. This is the same program that produced:

  • Every ACC title from 1956-1979 in Outdoor Track.
  • Renaldo Nehemiah, who set a world record as a sophomore at Maryland in the 110m hurdles.
  • Mark Coogan, 1996 US Olympic Marathon.
  • Multiple All-Americans, including Dominic Berger, who competed for the US in the Pan Am games in the 110m hurdles last month.
  • Current Head Coach Andrew Valmon: also head coach of the US Olympic Track and Field Team next summer in London.

If you could join the Facebook group "Save Maryland Men's XC/Track & Field," that would be amazingly supportive as we try to figure out the next best step to prevent this all from transpiring. Among other programs, both swimming and diving programs are slated to be lost, who count GRC's own Lindsay Jerdonek in their distinguished alumni. Please check out http://www.saveumdswimming.org/ as well.

On behalf of a lot of disappointed Terrapins out there, I sincerely appreciate the support.

Thanks,

Patrick
