Does running help or hinder your body when you're sick (a cold)? I've always gotten different opinions...
I've been on cold medicine for the past 48 hours, ran Wednesday and took Thursday off. I'd like to run this evening (on a treadmill if need be) but I don't want to "deplete the tanks". Good idea or bad idea? I don't think I have a fever but I do have a sore throat, running nose and dry cough.
Thoughts?
Thanks.

Well, I read that running does weaken the immune system. However, if it's just a cold, or a sickness that doesn't hinder your running it will eventually go away and I'd continue running. If you are going to run tonight, I'd definitely run outside as opposed to the treadmill. During the winter there are much fewer germs outdoors. If you are sick to the point where you can't make it work, then I'd take a break from running. I'm not an expert on this. It's just my humble opinion.
I had the same type of thing a couple weeks ago. I just kind of scaled back the volume and intensity a little. For example, instead of doing 8 miles I would do 6, and instead of doing 6 by 800, I just did 6 by 3 minutes on the canal so that I didn't press to hit times on the track. Get more sleep and drink more fluids and it should pass. Sometimes when it has been linked to the lungs (bronchitis, pneumonia) for me it doesn't pass, and I have needed take time off.
Luke's right- keep it out of your lungs. I would also take zinc, vit E and C. (You should take these every day to try to prevent.) I don't start running until I start feeling better. Could be a day, could be a week.
Other thing is we have a big workout on tuesday- probably best to feel 100% for that and fully utilize it, as opposed to getting in a few extra days of so-so mileage and perhaps a sub par workout.
don't be a wimp jake------- you are a meer pup at 26 and can handle a day of running with a cold. big difference between a cold and the flu---if you have the flu and are weak and feel shivers and such, take time off.
kidding about the wimp stuff. point is, don't overanalyze it. it comes down to how you really feel. you will know when you start off for a jog if you are really weak and its time to rest. if you feel ok and are just caughing and sneezing, but you are strong, go ahead.
Max, I think Hell as frozen over because I agree with you :).
Thanks. I've also given up ciggarettes in an effort to shake this thing.
Woah, Jake. No need to make any rash decisions. Just cut back to 1 pack a day or so.
Yo Scott, I knew you were a stud in high school, but recently found out your times from highschool & Penn State. You'll be in 25min 8K shape in no time once we start hitting workouts
