marathon reports:

Steamtown. At mile 8, melissa was tied for 1st at around 6:05 pace (that's sub 2:40!). By the half Steve Crane was in the lead. My info is from jake at the race site.

In chicago, from the live update: Laura K Turner, 00:58:59 (net) @ 15K. Pace 6:19. Predicted 02:45:36. By The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. The pace is rather slow with the leaders. The men went through 9 miles at 5:05, the women at 5:50 pace. I have a report that it is already 76 degrees in the shade.

and if I'm reading it right...it took money 1:13 just to get to the starting line..which means he has a 1:20:29 half....

Laura K Turner, 01:23:16 (net) @ Half. Pace 6:21. Predicted 02:46:29. By The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. The temp I gather is now 86ish.

Concern for melissa as she is a bit off the checkpoint.

Crane strong at 16 in the lead.

Just talked to Jake....sounds like it is way to hot and humid up there too...Melissa sounds like she battle the hills but pulled up around the 18 mile mark.

what happened to steve money? I cannot find him on the tracking system. Also, seems like Rolly might have dropped out. Smits finished in 2:45 and some change. I guess the finish was the closest ever. The times for the first and second were identicle.

Was Phillipe registered? I looked for his name a few days ago and couldn't find him. My alma mater had a pretty good day considering: 2 guys at 2:32 and 1 at 2:40. The two at 2:32 were 20th and 23rd. The guy at 20th was his first.
Jake said Crane just missed the qualifier.

I'm alive! Barely. And I finished. Barely. 3:11 will not go down as one of my best performances. The heat really kicked my ass. It was 90 degrees by the time I finished. I was doing alright through the half, when the sun was still behind the clouds, but once it came out and the temp started to climb, things went downhill. I managed to plod my way across the line, but half the field wasn't even allowed to finish because of the high temps and insufficient water supplies on the course. I'll live to run another day. Will have to wait for results to see how Laura and Philippe did.

army 10 miler. Did not seem to be too many local runners. Susannah ran an awesome 59:11 (5:56 pace) to finish 2nd. Bert and Medina were the two highest area guys.

Back in North Bethesda now and eating Indian food.

I saw the race at three spots...7.75, 16.75 and 20.

Crane ran 2:23 low or 2:22 high...his last 5k hurt...18flat. Hills were very tough (according to him) in the last 2 miles. Dave Berdan of Charm City ran great...and finished 2nd. Berdan was way back and really ran smart finishing only 30 secs behind local Crane.

Melissa went out too hard. She hit 10k in 37:40 and was running in the lead with a 34 year old with braces. The race is downhill and apparently it felt easy...by mile 16.75 she was in 3rd place and wanting to stop. Her quads were beat...too much downhill pounding. Her half was 1:23:15. She pulled out shortly after mile 18 (2 hours)Matias was there and gave me live reports on the bike...videos and pictures to come.

On way home I ran 10 miles through the Gettyburg Battlefield...great times. I ran into the wheat fields, away from the waning sun a la General George Picket (Picket's Charge). A fitting end to a day of running.

Thanks to the Gtown folks who were sending their mental energy! I was fine until about 14 miles, having run most of the first half with two college teammates: Julia Stamps and Caroline Annis. I was very well-hydrated with gatorade beforehand and more gatorade at every water stop. However, I started getting dizzy just after the half, so I took a Gu, slowed down a bit, drank some gatorade. Shortly after 15, I had a full-on asthma attack. It came out of nowhere! Luckily, Lindsay's husband and a random physical therapist were there, as I was nowhere near an aid station. Got a ride to the medical tent in an ambulance (the ambulance driver managed to pick up a very concerned Dave O along the way). They pumped me full of fluids and drugs, and made me down two bottles of gatorade and a banana before leaving the medical tent. I promptly threw all of that up upon returning to the hotel. Between Boston and Chicago, I sure know how to pick my marathons! Not sure what my next move is, but I am giving myself at least a week off to mull it over and certainly get in to see my doctor to make sure I have the asthma under control. Turns out I was probably among the top 20 or so women when I collapsed--it was a death march.
