good race all. somewhere along the way i got lost as did others. its all good though. hope people are not too banged up. reaves ran a pr. congrats to pat. i got passed by murphy in the end. i am mad and will get my revenge.
a bunch of us are meeting at chief ikes mambo run at 9pm this eve for a few drinks and jokes. nothing too hard. the place is sort of a dive with some history. its on columbia rd right up from the morgan.

Guy on the left in the Pacers jersey, Robbie Wade, ended up coming out on top today, just moved to the DC area from Chicago. Tough Irishman, he'll continue to tear up the DC running scene.

I started the racing season yesterday with a 10k in Alexandria. I've been having a bit of a knee problem in the last week and in retrospect I should never have run the race. However, I'm in fairly food shape and I'm gearing up for a half marathon next weekend. The 10k would hopefully be a good workout leading up to that race. The goal was to run 31:40-something knowing that I wouldn't be in top form until April.
My race plan was to go out pretty hard and see how I would handle the competition. The musket (in the spirit of Geo Wash and prez day) blasted off and I bolted out to the front. I tucked behind Mike Wardian and pushed up the first hill. We started to slow just a bit and I looked behind to see a giant 10-man pack chomping on my heels. I unexpectedly had the lead and then began to move forward. Wardian began to surge ahead and a smaller 6 man group formed behind him (including me). We hit the mile in 5:02 and 2 miles in 10:04. However, by mile 2 I was falling a little off the pack. The next couple of miles meandered through a park and were subsequently much slower. I also fell apart pretty bad here. The lead pack dwindled to only 4. I fought with Wardian and Nate Carlson a few seconds back. As we crossed a bridge I did a quick look to see a number of hungry runners moving up including arch nemesis and killer of cute small animals Bert Rodriguez (my attempt to make him seem like an evil person), training partner Patrick Reaves, Allen Carr and friendly nemesis Brian Baille. Wardian was pulling away and I continued to fall apart/fall asleep. I hit mile 3 in 15:21ish (long?) and then mile 4 in 20:4X. Bert passed me somewhere around here and I muttered "your early" since he usually kicks me down late in the race. I hit mile 5 in 25:58 well off where I needed to be in order to run a decent time but I decided to make the best of it and try and catch Bert and maybe some of the other guys ahead of him...but everyone was basically running the same pace in the last mile and no one made much ground. I ended up finishing in 8th in 32:18...a poor performance at best especially considering I had a very light week b/c of my knee. Times after the top 10 were especially slow because everyone went the wrong way. Even more distressing is how bad my knee felt the day after the race. I made a the amateur mistake of racing on an injury...stupid, stupid, stupid. I went on a long solo walk today muttering to myself about being so foolish. I'm likely nixing the half marathon planned for next weekend and will focus on getting 100% healthy since the end goal is running well at Cherry Blossom and Boston Marathon in early/mid-April. I can run on my knee but there is pain and I don't want this to get worse before it gets better. Before the knee problem, I'd been having some unbelievable long runs/workouts and feel super strong. Time to regroup and then attack.
Also - Peter clearly has an agenda. I liked how he cropped the image to include a "Ron Paul" sign. Tisk, tisk, tisk, I thought this team was neutral in politics...
